Course Syllabus

Abstract

In the age of postindustial society, post-modern culture and digitalization political sphere is getting increasingly mediatized which results, for instance, in the merger of political and media elites. The course is focused on various aspects of political communications and sheds light on how media cover and at the same time shape domestic and foreign politics of different actors, including states, international organizations and a variery of non-governmental agents. Students of this course will be given theoretical and practical tools to critically analyze relevent politial agenda formed by opinion leaders, bloggers and professional journalists via traditional and new media outles. These comprise print and online newspapers, radio and podcasts, TV and YouTube channels as well as different digital platforms, etc.

  • Familiarization of students with the key debates and trends in contemporary media studies as well as communication theory at the intersection with political science.
  • The ability to practically implement this theoretical apparatus in media production and media analytics.

  • writes simple journalistic texts in different genres, ranging from news to opinion pieces
  • uses storytelling techniques when creating media content on policy-related topics

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Participation during the classes - 0,3
    Students' participation assessment is based on their contributions during class discussions, their engagement with the course material and classmates and the quality of the completed hometasks. Students will have the opportunity to improve their participation grade throughout the semester by actively engaging in discussions, asking questions, and demonstrating a willingness to learn from their peers.
  • non-blocking Final Project - 0,4
    The students are expected to create an analytical article, expert interview or any other material (video, podcast, series of posts) relevant to the current social or political agenda. The topic should be chosen and discussed with the tutor in advance.
  • non-blocking Homework - 0,3
    The task is to discuss several controversial cases from the history of the Russian or foreign political media field through the prism of debates. There will be two cases, three groups of interests will be working on each case. The aim of each group (media managers, journalists, audience) is to convince the others in their own point of view on the problem and suggest the solution of the ethical dilemma. The cases will be announced a week before and the groups will be formed at the same time.
