STUDENTS' EXPEDITION TO HIMALAYAS (JAMMU AND KASHMIR)

Assessing the role and contribution of traditional/local knowledge systems for sustainable development in the Indian Himalayas.

The overall project will be divided into three parts to fulfil the research objectives:

i)                   Anthropogenic pressures in the Indian Himalayas

ii)                  Traditional knowledge structures in the Indian Himalayas

iii)               Knowledge and capacity building in the Indian Himalayas

The overall aim of the project will be divided into the following objectives:

  1. To analyse the anthropogenic pressures in the Indian Himalayan Mountain ecosystem.
  2. To document the traditional knowledge structures associated with agriculture (with a particular focus on millet), natural resource utilisation, forest management, biodiversity, etc., in both Western and Eastern Indian Himalayas.
  3. To assess the role and contribution of traditional/local knowledge systems for sustainable development in the Indian Himalayas.
  4. To determine the steps towards integrating traditional and modern knowledge systems towards ensuring environmental sustainability in the IHR.
  5. To build capacity among the general public for sustainable development in the IHR.

In our proposed fieldwork we will mainly consider the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh as representatives of the Western Himalayas while considering the North-Eastern partof the country as representatives of the Eastern Himalayas.
