May 31 - meeting with French senators

On may 31, 2019, the HSE French Club hosted a meeting of students with senators from France: Christophe-André Frassa, Ronan Le Gle, Jacques Deromedi. The meeting was also attended by Jean-Didier Berto, Advisor to the mayor of Paris and Alexis Tarrad, representative of the party "Republicans" in Russia and Belarus. The meeting was also attended by the Consul General of France in St. Petersburg, Mr. Hughes de Chavagnac.

The meeting was very bright and lively. Students asked sharp questions to which senators gave interesting answers. One of the questions concerned the restoration of Notre Dame Cathedral after the fire. Advisor to the mayor of Paris, Mr. Berto assured the meeting that the decision on what kind of Cathedral will be restored, will be taken by the authorities together with the Parisians.

The topic of the current foreign policy of France caused a lively debate. Responding to Vera Ageeva, associate Professor at the HSE Department of Political Science in St. Petersburg, Mr. Frassa said that France has a long history of active foreign policy position on a wide range of international issues and, as a medium-sized power, implements an independent foreign policy course in accordance with the national interests of France.

Students also asked questions about the results of the elections to the European Parliament, the prospects for the formation of a single European army, the work of the "Union of the French Abroad". The meeting ended with an interesting discussion on the modern understanding of patriotism in France and Russia.
