Scientific Potential of St Petersburg Makes It One of the Leaders Among Global Metropolises
St Petersburg took the 73rd place in the rating of innovative attractiveness of world cities 'HSE Global Cities Innovation Index 2024' (HSE GCII 2024) prepared by the Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge of HSE University. The city was ranked in the top 100 world cities in such directions as the city environment (43rd place), creative industries (92nd place) and technological development (97th place).
The northern capital took the 35th place in the category of music and the 39th place in the category of art. There are famous musical and film teams such as 'MusicAeterna' led by Teodor Currentzis, award winner of 'The International Opera Awards', and film companies 'Proline Film' and the creative-production association 'Rock' marked at international film festivals.
One of the strongest sides of the administrative centre of the North-West Federal District is the scientific and educational potential. In St Petersburg, there are eight universities included in the international rankings of higher education. The scientific potential of the city is complemented by the leading research organisations: Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, Sechenov Institute of Evolutionary Physiology and Biochemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Pulkovo Observatory.
St Petersburg also takes the 43rd place in the level of urban environment development, taking over Sofia, Cologne and Austin. The Northern capital has a high availability of business (4th place) and life (12th place). Besides, St Petersburg is notable for its high tourist attractiveness (29th place) with lots of objects of cultural and sports leisure by which St Petersburg takes the 5th place.
The rating 'HSE GCII 2024' includes more than 1000 cities in 144 countries, which feature leading world companies, universities and prominent figures such as Nobel laureates, cited scientists and famous representatives of creative industries.
HSE research is based on 90 indexes calculated on the basis of international data sources and statistically audited. The rating does not use expert reviews or administrative data which guarantees its objectivity and reliability.
