Student Research Paper Competition Launched at HSE

Student Research Paper Competition Launched at HSE

About the competition

Student Research Competition (NIRS) has been held to support student research since 2003. At first, it assumed the participation of HSE students only but since 2018 all nominations are open to students of Russian and foreign universities.

There are 22 research areas a paper can be submitted for - from technical sciences and applied mathematics to art and design. In each area, except for mathematics, two separate competitions are held: for undergraduate students of master and bachelor programmes and graduates of 2019.

Ivan Gruzdev

Director for Internal Monitoring and Student Academic Development

'We want everyone to spread the word about the NIRS competition. Some students tend to evaluate their results too modestly and consider their thesis not strong enough even if it is highly marked by teachers. The courage of the city takes over. Many winners and laureates of the past years say that they were not sure whether it was worth participating. But they tried and it worked out.'

Participants and application process

To participate in the competition you must be an author of a research paper and be a bachelor or master programme student or this year graduate of any Russian or foreign university.

Submission and verification of papers take place online, so you can take part in the competition without coming to Moscow.

Verification of work is carried out anonymously by the experts of the subject commission in each direction. The competition results will be announced in December, and the awards ceremony will be held in January 2020.

Why you should participate

Winners and laureates of the competition will receive a diploma to their portfolios, which will enhance the chances of getting increased scholarships and can be useful when enrolling in a master programme.

Winners from among students, graduate students and employees of HSE receive a travel grant for a trip with a report to a conference or summer school. Students from other universities who win the competition have the opportunity to 'activate' their grant if they start to study or work at HSE.

Andrey Kozhanov

Director of the Centre for Student Academic Development
'Travel grants are valid for two years. Last year, 22 students and research trainees at HSE of the 143 winners of the competition have already taken this opportunity. Some people presented a report at the conference, others mastered an intensive educational programme in a foreign university or discussed the draft of their research paper in English. In the project 'Science Republic' we support such applications and try to talk more about them.'

Another bonus for the participants was prepared by the Polytechnic Museum, a partner of the NIRS competition. It will offer rewards to those winners of the competition who will be selected by the scientific council of the museum.

In addition, events are held annually for the best participants in HSE, allowing young scholars to establish a scientific network. In 2018, the Academicus Modus School in Voronovo became such a platform for communication, and in 2019, the laureates were invited to a seminar of the student scientific avant-garde in the Mercury Tower.

Details on the conditions of the NIRS competition are on its website.
