International Recognition

International diploma, double degree programme, increased academic load group – all this is just an incomplete range of opportunities available for students of bachelor programme “Economics” at HSE University – Saint Petersburg.

Programme “Economics” of HSE – Saint Petersburg provides a broad education in Economic Theory, Empirical Research, Behavior in Corporate Sector, in own business and academic environment as well as it provides extensive Math and IT preparation. Programme is constantly growing and improving. So, this academic year the group of increased academic load (IAL) with an advanced course in Math and Economic disciplines, and electives expanding students’ horizons was launched. The programme is designed to become an environment for the development of motivated and ambitious students. First of all, the group should cause interest in the Olympiad winners, as well as of the students preparing to research activities in an academic or business environment. From the first year of study student will be assigned an individual mentor from the international laboratories HSE – St. Petersburg or campus’ partners, they will work together with lecturers with a PhD degree. Besides, the best students of increased academic load group can count on a grant within academic mobility, and after graduation, they will receive recommendations to leading companies and master’s programmes of the world.

Starting from the next academic year, students of “Economics” programme for the first time will have an opportunity to study Qualitative Economics in Barcelona on their 4th year within the international mobility programme. The most successful students will be able to choose their dual diploma track with University Pompeu Fabra – one of the leaders in the Economics education sphere. This is a high level of recognition of education in HSE – Saint Petersburg.

Maria Grebenshchikova, a third-year student of “Economics” programme, trainee researcher of the Center for Market Studies and Spatial Economics, is one of those students who managed to get on the dual degree programme of HSE and Pompeu Fabra University.

- It is difficult to talk about my achievements, all the students from my course do their best to be excellent students, we are not far away from each other. However, my achievements in study, science and extra-curriculum activities let me get on the dual degree programme «Dual Degree Programme in International Studies». It is still hard for me to believe that we have such an opportunity: there is no another education programme in Russia which has such an agreement.

By the time I get two diplomas, I will have already known which master degree I will have entered. I plan to apply my documents to research programmes: there are more chances to enter to PhD programme after them. I want to travel to different countries with different level of their economic development. Is it real to conduct empirical researches if you do not leave a laboratory? I will learn how to generate ideas and to formulate the questions.

I started my research activity on the second year when I got a position at CMSSE (Center for Market Studies and Spatial Economics) with Sergey Kokovin and started doing empirical researches with David Gomtsyan, a research fellow of the Center. Our joint projects are related to the various fields: Development Economics, Labor Economics, International Trade. In the laboratory, I received additional incentives to study Economics. Besides hard-skills, I got academic soft-skills: I presented the project on international workshops and I communicated a lot with other researchers. We write about our work in Nota Bene Journal. Vitalia Eliseeva and I created this extra-curriculum project in order to form a scientific community in “Economics” programme. We publish our materials, talk about the ways of economics development and HSE – Saint Petersburg lab activity, we organize meetings where we share the information about an application to the strongest master and PhD programmes. At the end of July, we will cover events of the International Economics Olympiad and we will take interviews with famous economists. Follow the publications, it is going to be interesting!
