New Centre for Data Analytics and Machine Learning
A new school of physics, mathematics and computer sciences at HSE University St. Petersburg is set to become an important centre for advanced flagship research in data analysis and machine learning.
The concept of the new school at HSE's St. Petersburg campus includes several important centres for advanced research. The founding of the first centre has recently been approved by the University Scientific Council. The centre will devote its activity to the development of flagship research in big data analysis and in algorithms of machine learning, as well as artificial intelligence.
To develop this centre of research excellence, the school will recruit scientists with excellent international reputations and is going to design a unique programme for visiting researchers and postdoctoral fellows.
The new centre will focus on cutting-edge research in the most significant spheres of data analytics and machine learning, namely: (1) development of methods for dealing with big data (such as sensors readings, image libraries, audio- and video- recordings etc.); (2) development of new algorithms for machine learning and artificial intelligence; (3) solutions to machine learning tasks, such as image and speech recognition, automatized translation, web-ranking tasks, processes optimization etc.
The opening of this centre is yet another step by the university towards realizing its strategy aimed at developing centres of excellence in the computer sciences, digital research and quantitative methods.
