Ms. Fidelma Russo, Senior Vice President and General Manager of EMC Corporation, delivered a lecture for students of HSE St. Petersburg on January 26, 2016.

This event was part of EMC’s guest lecture series for students of the Higher Schools of Economics. Ms. Russo, a professional with a substantial experience in IT and business development, shared her insights into managing an international team in a global company, leadership and motivation in an era of change, as well as the role of women in IT.The lecture drew a full house, with students from the St. Petersburg School of Economics and Management filling all the seats in a large auditorium.

Vyacheslav Nesterov, Russia EMC CoE General Manager, and Dr. Kadochnikov, Director of HSE St. Petersburg, gave a welcome speech. Dr. Kadochnikov underlined the value of partnership between the university and EMC, an international IT company, which holds a leading position in the cloud computing, big data and information security markets.

‘Today our students are developing a data evaluation project for EMC.  Next academic year we intend to open a new master’s programme entitled ‘Big Data Analysis for Business, Economics and Society”, which will be supported by this company. We are proud of our partnership with EMC Corporation, and we intend to develop a long-term relationship with them. In this sense, today’s event represents one of the steps we are taking in this direction.’ – Dr. Kadochnikov noted.

Ms. Fidelma Russo, in her turn, recounted her career, encouraging the audience to search for their own path, change jobs and places when appropriate, and never give up. She also shared her observations on the differences between male and female understanding of the IT-industry. She believes that a mixture of these approaches can give significant advantages to a company which aims to become successful in the information technology market.  In her speech, she paid particular attention to the principles of management in an IT company. She presented her experience in building leadership qualities, managing small and large groups of professionals and shaping an efficient team.

She stated that today it is essential that economics develop in parallel with information technologies. ‘It has been an honour for me to be here and meet all these aspiring young leaders from your prestigious school. Today we can clearly see that the IT industry needs good managers. So, it is very important that the blend of your fields of study and research meets the blend of science and technology. As we go forward, the IT industry will fuel a lot of growth in the economy. In this situation, having people who understand both the business and technological  sides of it will lead to a greater success of the global and, I hope, Russian economies’, Ms. Russo concluded.
