This September, 16 German students spent three weeks exploring the political and cultural space of St. Petersburg during the Summer School ‘The Topography of Imperial Power’ organized by the HSE Department of History in cooperation with the Department of the History of Eastern Europe (Georg-August University of Göttingen).

Today, opening Russia's state borders with other countries remains one of the most pressing issues. Recently, much conflicting information has emerged around this topic. HSE students returned to their classrooms on March 29, 2021, but many international students keep studying in a distant mode.
On August 21st, Saint Petersburg HSE Summer School, which has been taking place since 2017, came to a close. This year it moved online due to the pandemic. 44 participants from 18 countries, including France, Ireland, the USA, the Philippines, China, and others were joining Zoom during four weeks. The organisers of the Summer School were happy to welcome students of 15 HSE partner universities such as Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, King’s College London, Sciences Po Lyon, University of Basel, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, and others.
Many international students study at HSE University - Saint Petersburg's English-taught programmes. They come to Russia from different corners of the world for different reasons: to learn the Russian language, to live in a new place, or to immerse themselves in an intercultural environment. We asked several undergraduate students to share their impressions of studying at the university, interacting with classmates and lecturers, and living in Saint Petersburg.
In late May, the HSE campus in St. Petersburg finalized negotiations with three foreign partner universities to launch three new double degree tracks at the Master’s level.
HSE University – St Petersburg is currently operating remotely. Still, the university team is dedicated to preserving the quality of all academic and administrative processes, and international student admissions is not an exception. Both full-time and exchange programme applications will continue to accepted in the usual manner.
In January, Saint Petersburg HSE Winter School hosted a group of students from Smith College, the United States. Besides courses on Russian culture and history, they had an intense programme: weekends in Moscow, going to a theatre and numerous museums, watching a hockey game, and much more. We asked some Winter School participants about their experience in Saint Petersburg and how it affected them.
State Duma passed a bill that simplifies the procedure for employment of international students in Russia. The bill will take effect in August 2020.
On December 13th, the First Internationalization for International Students Conference brought together international students and representatives of the HSE Saint Petersburg administration in order to discuss recent developments and new challenges in HSE's internationalization campaign.
This autumn students from the United States came to study at HSE University - Saint Petersburg via CIEE to learn more about Russian culture, history, and people.
