Course Syllabus

Abstract

“Second foreign language (Chinese)” is a two-year course delivered in English for the second-year and third-year students. The course is aimed at acquirement basic knowledge and competences of modern Chinese language, including phonetics, graphics, normative grammar and vocabulary in the amount provided by the course. The aim of studying is also to enable students to develop proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Chinese. It aims to foster intercultural competence and provide students with the ability to communicate effectively in Chinese-speaking environments, both orally and in writing. Additionally, the study of a second foreign language can enhance cognitive abilities, improve memory and problem-solving skills, and broaden cultural horizons. Prerequisites for this discipline include the completion of the introductory course (second year of the program) or an equivalent proficiency level in Chinese (HSK 1-2).

Assessment Elements

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Homework
    Average result of all home assignments including calligraphy tasks, phonetic dictations, lexical and grammatical exercises, translations of sentences; compositions (topics).
  • non-blocking In-class participation
    Average result of all kinds of class participation: control reading of syllables/sentences/tongue twisters; reading texts and answering questions/ making up situational dialogues.
  • non-blocking Tests
    Average result of all tests. The test is taken after each completed lesson, lasts for 30 minutes, and includes five types of tasks: writing down characters, writing down syllables, translating sentences from English to Chinese, identifying errors/corrections/translations into Russian, and constructing sentences from scattered Chinese characters.
  • non-blocking Exam
    Exam results including oral part and written part. The exam is conducted in oral and written forms (a monologue on a topic and three types of written tasks: translating sentences from English to Chinese, identifying errors/corrections/translations into Russian, and constructing sentences from scattered Chinese characters = a total of 10 sentences). A student should attend the exam according to the RUZ schedule. Students take an oral part first. The written part should be taken immediately after the oral part in synchronous mode.
