HSE Joins Top 50 in QS Rankings of Young Universities

The Higher School of Economics (HSE) has taken 48th place in the QS Top 50 Under 50 ranking. Furthermore, it is the sole Russian academic institution in this ranking.

QS has been publishing rankings of young universities since 2012 to track the progress of fledgling, fast-developing HEIs, which have yet to form a long-term reputation due to obvious reasons, yet which can already present a  challenge to long-established players in higher education.

The ranking includes global universities under 50 years old and is based on the same criteria as the main QS university rankings (e.g., academic reputation, student-to-faculty ratios, citations per faculty member, reputation among potential employers, international faculty and international student ratios). HSE has appeared in the ranking since 2015, and has improved its position by over 30 positions in this time. Moreover, HSE is the only Russian university present in the Top-100 of young universities according to two global rankings (QS and Times Higher Education).

Zoya Zaitseva, Regional Director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia at QS, notes: ‘HSE is one of the most ambitious Russian universities and clearly its progress in the QS World University Rankings, as well as in other ranking tables, proves they are on the right track.’

Australia and Asian countries lead in this Top-50 by number of young universities. No university from the U.S. has so far appeared in the Top-50.
