Nowruz at HSE University–St Petersburg: Spring Festival Unites Representatives of Various Cultures

The HSE building on Griboyedova Canal Embankment hosted an event devoted to Nowruz—an ancient Eastern festival symbolising the beginning of a new year and renewal of nature. Students of various universities from Pakistan, India, Iran, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Azerbaijan shared their distinctive local traditions, festive decorations, and national cultural practices.

The event started with a speech by Anna Tyshetskaya, Director of HSE University–St Petersburg. She highlighted the international importance of such initiatives: 'In any culture, spring is perceived as a symbol of the renewal of life, nature awakening, and a source of hope and happiness. HSE University not only brings together students of different nationalities under one roof, but we also create a truly multicultural space where we value and respect the customs of each people, learn from each other, and jointly form a unique environment of mutual understanding.'

Participants from different countries spoke about their Nowruz traditions, introduced the guests to national dishes, and invited everyone to take part in games and dances.

Ivana Angjelovska, event coordinator and manager at the International Student and Alumni Centre, shared the goals of such meetings: 'Nowruz is a large international holiday recognised by UN resolution. It's important to show respect for international students' traditions and cultural customs. I was very impressed by the lively dances by students from Afghanistan (almost all the guests joined them), the interesting historical insight by a student from Iran, and a presentation of Nowruz traditions by students from Uzbekistan. It was interesting to find out that Azerbaijan has a custom of painting eggs, which is similar to Easter traditions in Russia. Such meetings not only introduce us to the cultures of different countries, but also truly bring people closer.'

Twelve percent of HSE University–St Petersburg students are from outside Russia. The university helps them to adapt and provides platforms for international communication. In turn, they actively participate in the university's social life.

Waiz Siddiqui, student of the Master's programme 'Data Analytics for Business and Economics', was among the organisers of the Nowruz holiday. 'I'm very grateful to our university for the help in organising such an amazing meeting! Celebrating Nowruz and spending this day with all the attendees really mean a lot to me. Many thanks to HSE University–St Petersburg for making all of us international students feel at home,' he said.

HSE University's celebration of the traditions of various peoples will continue on April 4 at 3 pm at the Fair of Nationalities of Russia, which will take place in the building on Kantemirovskaya Street. Guests will have a chance to attend workshops and quizzes, take part in national dances, and try traditional treats. Register via the link to participate.
