Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course introduces students to the key concepts related to languages, cultures and intercultural communication, which are fundamental to language learning and teaching. It will focus on the social and cultural contexts of languages and how language reflects culture and society, and what this means for communication and language teaching. In the part that focuses on intercultural communication, the students will build cultural awareness and will learn how to communicate effectively with members of other cultures, including business settings, and how best to approach and deal with intercultural problems and challenges. The course will also focus on such topics as the theory of linguistic relativity, language varieties, English accents and dialects, endangered languages, language policy and language and power. In addition, this course will review basic linguistic concepts related to language teaching.

  • Provide students with a systematic understanding of key concepts related to language, culture, and intercultural communication as foundational elements of language learning and teaching.
  • Develop students’ cultural awareness through the analysis of language in its social, cultural, and professional contexts.
  • Equip students with intercultural communication strategies for effective interaction in academic, professional, business, and digital environments.
  • Develop students’ ability to analyse language and communication practices with attention to linguistic variation, meaning-making, persuasion, visual representation, and sociocultural factors.
  • Foster students’ intercultural and cultural intelligence competences relevant to education, management, media, tourism, and other professional domains.
  • Support the development of students’ academic communication skills, with particular emphasis on oral academic presentations in English.

Assessment Elements

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Classroom participation
    Students are expected to attend all lectures and seminars, complete assigned readings and tasks, and actively participate in class discussions. Preparation for classes includes reading theoretical texts, case studies, or practical materials related to intercultural communication. During seminars, students are expected to contribute by asking and answering questions, analysing examples, and engaging in discussions relevant to the topics covered.
  • non-blocking Test
    In two lectures or seminars, students are given a test based on lectures by the course instructor and/or the seminars. The number and form of questions may vary within the same test and from test to test: open-ended, multiple-choice, matching, etc. The test may be conducted at no advance notice. There are 2 tests per module. The tests can be retaken with the consent of the course instructor if a student has a valid reason for missing the test. Otherwise, the result for the missed test is marked 0 (zero). The mark for this course component is the mean of the marks for all the tests offered throughout the module.
  • non-blocking Online game
    This is an online business simulation game. Aim of the game: to devise a successful marketing campaign by adjusting it to the cultural norms of the selected country in order to sell one of the company’s products. There are 3 stages that involve a number of tasks: CV application and interview, teamwork on a marketing campaign for a selected country and team’s presentation of their final project. Sample task: Assessment Criteria: The students will receive from one point for each correct answer (100 points maximum). They will receive a grade according to the assessment scale below:

    Devise a successful marketing campaign for an English-speaking country by adjusting it to cultural norms. Prepare a powerpoint presentation, in which you will propose your compaign. Group presentation: 4-5 students. Time: 4-5 minutes (6-8 slides)
