Abstract

The course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the evolution of literary works across different cultures and time periods. Assessment Elements

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Classroom participation
Students are expected to attend all lectures and seminars, complete homework and contribute to discussions. They need to be prepared for class by having read the assigned text(s). They contribute to seminar discussions by answering and asking questions relevant to the corresponding class section.
  • non-blocking Module tests
In two lectures or seminars, students are given a test based on lectures by the course instructor and/or the seminars. The number and form of questions may vary within the same test and from test to test: open-ended, multiple-choice, matching, etc. The test may be conducted at no advance notice. There are 2 tests per module.
  • non-blocking Project
The students prepare the project in mini-groups. The number of participants in a group is assigned by the course instructor. The groups work on the project throughout the course and present their results during the final classes (in December). The presentations are scheduled by the course instructor. The aim of the project is to find two works of literature which have significant similarities but belong to different national cultures and were created in different historic periods and to carry out a comparative analysis of these texts.
  • non-blocking Classroom presentation / Creative task
NB These tasks are optional. Students can choose one of them if they want to get maximum points for the course. Classroom presentation The students are provided with the list of key publicist and academic texts from each period studied. At the beginning of the module, they can choose ONE of them to prepare a brief talk (10-12 minutes) on its main points and importance for its epoch, which is delivered strictly on the day scheduled by the course instructor. After the talk, the student must be ready to answer questions from the audience. Creative task A student can choose a short text (a poem, a prosaic extract) from a particular epoch and 1) record an audio version accompanied by music of the time; OR 2) choose a painting of the time as a possible illustration . Then the student writes a short reflective passage (120-150 words) explaining the choice of the accompanying piece of art. The choice must be based on the analysis of the chosen text.
  • non-blocking Exam
The Oral exam takes place during the exam session period scheduled by study offices. It is conducted in English and assessed by the course instructor(s) or by the course commission board (see below). Each student receives two questions, where the first question corresponds to the theoretical material of the two modules (lectures) and the second question is based on the texts discussed at seminars. The questions are selected by the examiner. The student cannot ask for a different set of questions in exchange for a lower mark. The student may be required to answer additional questions on any theme studied throughout the course so that examiners could gain full insight into understanding of the material.
