Annotation:

In his talk, Marin Coudreau will focus on how the dramatic decade of 1914-1924 transformed pest control in Russia and the Soviet Union. From the late imperial period to the threshold of Stalin’s Great Break, the long sequence of war, revolution and civil war and its unfolding «natural disasters» is to be analyzed as a socio-environmental crisis from which emerged a new system of pest control aiming at radically reshaping nature. The talk will look at various entangled aspects of this process analyzed in there transnational dimensions. This time of socio-environmental crisis saw discursive and action categories, regimes of mobilization and technologies expand from the waging of war to the management of natural disasters. While pest control was harnessed to the needs of an emerging military-industrial complex, the mobilization of scientists for total war and the crystallization of multiple inter-professional collaborations were perpetuated in peace time across the military and civil spheres through the institutionalization of hybrid scientific and paramilitary organizations.
