Ludwig Wittgenstein: Prospects for Contemporary Practical Philosophy
The international conference «Ludwig Wittgenstein: Prospects for Contemporary Practical Philosophy» were held at the Higher School of Economics (HSE), Moscow on December 11-13, 2014.
Does Wittgenstein's injunction to “silence” on certain ethical matters prevent his being a thinker of the ethical stakes of philosophy? It is not easy to single the religious and ethical agenda out of Wittgenstein’s contradictory heritage. He had a lifelong interest in religion and claimed to see every problem from a religious point of view, but never committed himself to any formal religion. His various remarks on ethics also suggest a particular point of view, and Wittgenstein often spoke of ethics and religion together. What is the nature of goodness? Can value or meaning the world be found in the world itself? What makes the difference between a happy world and an unhappy one ? Why is there no answer to the problem of life – the solution is the disappearance of the problem? Can the rule-following paradox be solved? What are the relations between the language and the activity? All these and many other questions were analyzed by the conference participants.
