Department of Korean Studies

In the 2025–2026 academic year, students of the Department of Korean Studies at HSE University – St. Petersburg presented at conferences in Moscow, published an article on the platform of the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC), and took part in international models and cultural festivals. Behind most of these events lies the same logic: moving from an interest sparked in class toward an independent research outcome.

On March 11, 2026, the Institute for Asian and African Studies hosted an online roundtable titled “Women and Women’s Movements in East Asia.” The programme featured student presentations focusing on gender issues in China, Korea, and Japan.

On 21 October 2025, a working meeting was held in St Petersburg between representatives of the Institute for Oriental and African Studies and a delegation from Inha University, Republic of Korea.

On 8 October 2025, the Department of Korean Studies held a thematic cultural event celebrating the richness of Korean traditions. The evening brought together education, creativity, and informal exchange, allowing participants to immerse themselves in both the historical heritage and contemporary cultural trends of the Land of Morning Calm.

The International Partners Week 2025 became one of the most important international events of the year for the Institute for Asian and African Studies at HSE University-St Petersburg. After five days of the forum, experts in Asian and African studies from HSE University-St Petersburg held negotiations with representatives of 18 global universities from Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America, signed important agreements and shaped the directions for international cooperation in the future. Professor Evgeny Zelenev, Director of the Institute of Asian and African Studies, shares the results of IPW-2025.

On November 21, Nelly Georgieva-Russ, Associate Professor in the Department of Korean Studies, gave a lecture on Korean Folk Painting as part of a seminar organized by the department.

We take great pride in celebrating the achievements of our graduates. This time, we spotlight Elizaveta Grinevich, a 2023 graduate of the Institute of Asian and African Studies at HSE - St. Petersburg, who has embarked on a career in Korean studies.

The event was scheduled to coincide with the public holiday “Hangul Day,” celebrated in the Republic of Korea on October 9.
