The Department of Korean Studies focuses on the study of national traditions, history, culture, religion, and the socio-economic and political development of the Korean Peninsula. During their studies, students are offered a comprehensive approach to Korean studies, covering the major key aspects of both traditional and modern life in Korea.
To achieve maximumly efficient language learning, students study various aspects of the Korean language that reflect contemporary realities in Korea: modern spoken Korean (Seoul standard), business Korean, literary translation, media language, Korean characters (Hanja), and academic Korean. Department instructors develop teaching materials that encompass all areas of language instruction.
The department staff includes experienced practitioners and native speakers engaged in a range of research activities, from political history to contemporary literature. In addition to teaching and research, instructors are involved in translation work. Special attention is given to methods of teaching the Korean language as part of the department's research focus. The department actively collaborates with universities and research centres in South Korea.
Under the guidance of department instructors, students have the opportunity to stay up-to-date on contemporary issues in Asian studies and work on research topics with academic potential. A key aspect of the collaboration between the department staff and students is the implementation of various research and practice-oriented projects. This helps students develop professional skills in the field of Korean studies.
Each year, students of the department participate in and win awards at competitions and contests in Asian languages. Many receive grants for internships at universities in South Korea, including Sungkyunkwan University (성균관대학교), Kyung Hee University (경희대학교), Chung-Ang University (중앙대학교), and Seoul National University (서울대학교).
