Centers and Peripheries in Imagination and Action

What are national and imperial boundaries in the field of law and why do they matter for past and present? These were the key questions of the panel ‘Centers and Peripheries in Imagination and Action: Three Eurasian Examples’ at the Convention of American Society of Legal History in Toronto, October, 27-30, 2016.

Within the panel Tatiana Borisova (NRU Higher School of Economics St-Petersburg History Department) and Jane Burbank (New York University History Department) presented their research on the Russian legal history, while Assaf Likhovski (Tel Aviv University Faculty of Law) considered the impact of East-European law on Israeli legal practices.
One of highlights of the Convention was an inspiring speech of Natalie Zemon Davis, who was elected Honorary Fellow of American Society of Legal History 2016. A distinguished proponent of cross-disciplinary history, she acknowledged the importance of legal history for her own celebrated work in social and cultural history. History Department of NRU Higher School of Economics St-Petersburg includes legal history in various courses of both BA and MA curriculum.
