The Department of History was created in 2012. The overarching goal of the department is systematic development of the field of global, comparative, and transnational history as a potent tool of overcoming the limitations of national history canon, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue in the field of social sciences and humanities, and brining new public relevance to historical knowledge. The department mission includes the development of new type of historical undergraduate and graduate education in Russia and pioneering new research fields in Russian historiography in dialogue with the global historical profession.

Associate Professor in History at HSE St Petersburg Celebrates his 60th Birthday
Dr Dietmar Wulff started working with HSE St Petersburg on September 1, 2014 when the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in May 2014 approved the establishment of a long-term position of Associate Professor in History at HSE St. Petersburg. Prior to taking up this appointment, Dr Wulff had been lecturer in the Faculty of History, Philosophy, and Theology and Bielefeld University, Germany. Dr Wulff studied history at Voronezh university. In 1989 he defended his dissertation on ‘Trade and Policy in Russian German Relations – 1894-1904’ at the GDR Academy of Sciences.
Under this DAAD initiative, Dr Wulff is actively involved in sharing his experience in helping to develop ties between HSE St Petersburg and Germany’s leading educational institutions. He has organised summer and winter schools in English and German, work experience placements for BA students at history departments in German universities, and ran a summer school from September 8, 2015 – October 29, 2015, for German students at HSE St. Petersburg.
