Researchers from the Centre for Historical Research to Take Part in the International Workshop ‘Transplanting Modernity’

The international workshop ‘Transplanting Modernity’ will take place in June 2015 at Georgetown University (Washington, DC).

This workshop is dedicated to the ecological consequences of technological modernization and international development programs in developing countries in the twentieth century. The event will feature papers on the problems of using natural resources, reconfiguring landscapes, and technological projects in African countries from a comparative perspective. Staff members of the HSE Centre for Historical Research in St. Petersburg, Elena Kochetkova, Julia Lajus, Polina Slusarchuk, and Anna Vladimirova will present their paper ‘Soviet technological aid and environment in Africa in the late Cold War’. This paper is the result of their study as part of the Centre’s research project ‘History of technology and infrastructure in Russia and the Soviet Union’.

A collection of papers will be published as one of the outcomes of the workshop.
