Course Syllabus


This is an introductory course in OB research methodology. We'll look at the fundamentals of performing empirical research for publishing in scholarly management/OB journals, as well as the problems that come with it. We'll start by talking about how to frame research questions, how to build theories, how to make initial study design decisions, and how to deal with basic concerns in empirical testing. After that, we'll look at these difficulties in the context of several types of empirical study. We'll go over readings that explain the core rationale and technicalities of these research methods, as well as research studies that show how OB scholars have utilized them individually and in combination in their work.

  • The goal of this course is to introduce students to the theories, methodologies, and approaches that characterize organizational behavior (OB), which is the study of people in organizations. On a variety of major topics in OB, we will examine classic and contemporary theories, ongoing debates, and growing empirical research. This course will assist students interested in a career in OB in developing their own research agenda. Students considering a career in a related area will be able to gain a better understanding of the field of OB, evaluate all sorts of research more critically, and integrate OB methodologies and insights into their own research agenda through this course.

Course Contents

Course Contents

  • Introduction
    tudents are strongly recommended that they should read articles from above-mentioned journals and find their area of interest for their research proposal. They can discuss it in first class, moreover for class participation and understandings students are suggested to read the papers and book chapters (key readings) before coming to class to enhance their class participation
  • Research questions and gaps/selected topic discussion
    In this class, students are expected to discuss their selected topic in the second half of the class and we will discuss your topics based on what we learned from this class.
  • Hypotheses development and theoretical framework/discussion
    In this class, we will continue to discuss your research topics and try to finalize the first draft of your research proposal.
  • Research design and Methods
    In this class we will study different research methods and designs in OB research and question regarding your research proposal will be also discussed.
  • Presentation of initial proposal drafts
    This class is fully devoted to the initial draft of your research proposal. You are expected to individually present your research proposal and also discuss challenges you had faced in constructing the initial draft.
  • Peer Review and discussion of proposals
    In this class remaining students will discuss their research proposals as well as peer review, they have got from their two classmates. Those who had already presented their initial draft of research proposals are expected to discuss peer review reports and how they had incorporated comments from two reviewers.
  • Writing and Publishing ethics
    In this class, we will continue to discuss your problems related to the research proposal as well any topic which needs more discussion along with the current topic of the class.
  • Second drafts of research proposal
    In this class, students will present the second draft of their research proposals. They will also report how they incorporated the points which were raised by the two reviewers.
  • Issues faced during developing research proposals
    In this class, we will discuss any issue you are currently facing in developing the final version of your research proposal. We will also discuss any topic of the last classes which needs more discussion.
  • Discussion of key papers in the field and student’s understandings
    Please turn in an annotated bibliography /chart of at least 5 empirical articles published in top- tier OB journals related to your topic. Try to find articles published in the last five years.
  • Final presentations and final review submission
    This class is for the final research proposal presentation and response to reviews which you got from two reviewers. Based on the quality of the research proposal and how you defended your proposal in questions and answers; your 50% marks will be given.
  • Final presentations
    The remaining students will present their proposals. This will be our final class; I wish after this class you will be much capable of writing your final thesis based on these learning and exercises.
