Date: 18th of December

Time: 4 p.m. (Moscow time)

Speaker: Dr. Marta Fanasca

In frame of the seminar Dr. Marta Fanasca, new international research fellow of the Centre for Youth Studies, will present her research.

Title of the presentation: “Gender performativity in Japanese subculture”

Abstract:

In this research seminar I will discuss counter hegemonic gender identities in contemporary Japan and their representations in Japanese media. I will focus on the phenomenon of Female-to-Male crossdressers known as dansō and on the entertainment world related to these crossdresser girls. Particular attention will be given to the world of dansō escorts, the focus of my PhD research, and the main topic of my proposed research to HSE. However, due to the current mobility limitations imposed by the COVID19 restrictions, I will also present an alternative research plan based on my second line of enquire. I am actively publishing on the topic of how counter hegemonic gender sexual identities are depicted and negotiated in Japanese manga and anime. Drawing upon my publications so far, I will address the reception of yuri manga in the contemporary Italian market. Yuri manga are focused on the representation of female-female sentimental relationships, but the connection of these media text with the LGBTQ+ community is highly debatable. My argument here is that these pop-cultural productions, strongly linked to the Japanese cultural heritage, are mis-represented when read and enjoyed in a non-Japanese context. I will take the Italian market as representative case study for this enquire.
