Results of Last Year

In recapping last year, the head of HSE's Department of Economics, Vladimir Matveenko, notes the serious academic successes of HSE staff and discusses what the Department’s team was particularly proud of ahead of the holidays.

The main event of the year for us was the creation of the Department of Economics within the St. Petersburg Faculty of Economics and Management. The Department brought together renowned Russian scholars and talented young economics. The Department is currently one of Russia’s strongest for its research results. In 2014, the Department of Economics’ instructors published articles in international peer-reviewed journals such as Contemporary Mathematics, Economics Letters, Economics Bulletin, Europe-Asia Studies, International Journal of Market Research, International Journal of Process Management and Benchmarking, International Review of Financial Analysis, IZA Journal of Labor and Development, Journal of International Economics, Journal of Urban Economics, Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting, as well as the leading Russian journals Issues in Economics (Voprosy Economiki), the Journal of the New Economics Association, Applied Econometrics, Spatial Economics, Mathematical Game Theory and Its Applications, the Journal of Sociology and Social Anthropology, Social Sciences and Modernity, and others.

Our instructors travelled the world in 2014 to speak at various conferences abroad, such as the World Finance Conference (Venice, Italy), PET Conference (Seattle, U.S.), EBES Singapore Conference (Singapore), Rimini Conference in Economics and Finance (Rimini, Italy), First European Conference on Social Networks Analysis (Barcelona, Spain), DEGIT Conference (Nashville, U.S.), Asia Pacific Trade Seminars (Seoul, South Korea), NARSC Conference (Washington, D.C., U.S.), AEA/ACES Annual Meeting (Philadelphia, U.S.), IZA & World Bank Conference on Employment and Development (Lima, Peru), EARIE Conference (Milan, Italy), and others. In addition, the most prestigious academic conferences of Russia could not have taken place in 2014 without the participation of our Department's instructors, who often served as members of programme and organizing committees, section leaders, and plenary presenters who held workshops for junior researchers.

As is common for university instructors, members of our economics department are not limited to just their own academic endeavours; they are always ready to help students, from those struggling to the most advanced. We believe that undergraduate and post-graduate economics students have served the department well by presenting at prestigious academic conferences, winning olympiads, getting published in journals that are in the Russian Science Citation Index, and entering master’s, post-graduate and leading PhD programmes. This is the merit of instructors as well.

Today we are standing on the threshold of another important event – a move to the building on Kantemirovskaya Street. In its architecture and academic and research equipment, the building fully meets the level of professionalism that we have achieved, as well as the ambitions we have and the university environment we want to create. The Faculty of Economics and Management is our new so-called megafaculty; that is, a system in which the dynamics of everyone’s development depends on the success of others. A good impetus was created in 2014 for this system’s future development.

I would like to tell students, teachers, and staff of our Department and HSE St. Petersburg: Keep up the good work, and Happy New Year!
