The International Center for Market Studies and Spatial Economics, set up in 2011 is headed by the well-known Franco-Belgian academic, Professor Jacques-Francois Thisse. There are plans afoot for yet another international laboratory to study global economics and development issues. For several years now the best student-economists have been going on periods of study abroad to the University of Mannheim (Germany). HSE has signed a student exchange agreement with the University of Aix-Marseilles School of Economics and students went there for the first time in September this year.
Other partners of the Department are Professor Alberto Bucci (Department of Economics, Management and Quantitative Methods University of Milan, Italy), Francisco Marhuenda (Departamento de Economía, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Spain), Tapio Palokangas (Department of Political and Economic Studies, University of Helsinki, Finland), Pietro Peretto (Department of Economics, Duke University, USA), Clemens Puppe ( Institut für Volkswirtschaftslehre (ECON), Karlsruher Institut für Technologie, Germany) and John Sitter (Department of Economics, North Carolina State University, USA).
Staff at the Department of Economics have taken part in a significant number of international conferences over the last two years and made visits to the Universities of Stockholm, Helsinki and Aix-Marseilles. In 2013-14 the Department held an international symposium, the ‘Workshop on endogenous growth and sustainable development’. The Department intends to make international events a regular part of its remit.
