In April 3-7, 2017 the seminar “North and Northerners” was conducted within the MA program. Olga Trufanova, first year student, shares her impressions after the seminar.
“The first week of the last module introduced us to the world of the North. During one-week seminar on the topic "North and Northerners" Russian and Finnish students from two affiliated universities, HSE SPb and Juväskulä, learned about the North and Arctic as an interdisciplinary academic discipline. The communication was organised in a form of seminars, excursions, group presentations and discussions which took place at the HSE, Norwegian University Centre, ice-breaker “Krasin” and the museum of Arctic and Antarctic..But more importantly, all participants of the seminar had a chance to meet the North personally during the trip to Karelia. In one day we visited Karela fortress, Kurkijoki museum and Filin Mountain (Landepodhja). This day which we spent together with each other gave an opportunity to meet each other, talk about our countries, exchange impressions about the day and to pick up some phrases in Russian or Finnish. A visit to the Mannerheim’s Line seems to be particularly touching and significant, since it showed how wonderful it is to live in peace with each other”.
