Ivan Sablin was awarded Research Scholarship of the German Historical Institute in Moscow

The German Historical Institute in Moscow supported the project “Buddhism in Soviet Transnational Projects, 1917–1991,” which Ivan Sablin, Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Historical Research, Higher School of Economics at Saint Petersburg, will carry out based on the materials from Moscow’s archives and libraries in 2017.

Ivan Sablin has been studying the history of Buddhism in Russia and the USSR since 2011. His book Governing Post-Imperial Siberia and Mongolia, 1911–1924: Buddhism, Socialism, and Nationalism in State and Autonomy Building (London: Routledge, 2016) focuses on the period before 1924. In the new project, Ivan Sablin plans to continue the exploration of the international implications of religious policies in the 1920s and study the Soviet anti-religious campaigns in the 1930s–1960s, postwar reestablishment of Buddhist institutions and reemergence of international religious policies.
