Ronald G. Suny: Legacies of Empire in Russian History

Professor of political and social history of the University of Michigan Ronald Suny held   a public lecture at the joint session of the seminar “Boundaries of History” of the Faculty of History and Center for Historical Research, and the Laboratory for Comparative Social Research, Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg on March 13, 2014.
The live webcast through the portal Net.abimperio.net was carried out with simultaneous translation. In his lecture, Professor Suny presented an analysis of the Russian historical experience from the perspectives of empire and nation building, which at the end of twentieth century led to emergence of the independent post-Soviet states. After the lecture, Professor Suny answered questions from the audience. Historical expertise proved particularly relevant for understanding the current political crisis in relations between the Russian Federation and Ukraine.
