"Boundaries of History" Nathan Marcus - Book Presentation "Austrian Reconstruction and the Collapse of Global Finance, 1921–1931"

Event ended

On May 17, 2018, at 6.30 pm we invite you to the seminar “Boundaries of History”. Nathan Marcus will present his book “Austrian Reconstruction and the Collapse of Global Finance, 1921–1931” (Harvard University Press)

From 1923 to 1926 the League of Nations oversaw the economic reconstruction of Austria.  During this time its General Commissioner in Vienna controlled the proceeds of a large foreign loan issued in 1923 and the pledged tax-revenues earmarked to finance it.  Although the Austrian currency and economy were successfully stabilised, some commentators accused the General Commissioner and the League of Nations of economic and financial malfeasance.  An analysis of primary sources and financial data reveals that the General Commissioner staff intervened repeatedly on Austria's behalf, both in London and Geneva.  In contrast, political caricatures show how Austrians viewed this early exercise in multilateralism critically and perceived international efforts on Austria's behalf as an unwelcome foreign intervention.
