Films About Art
Since the time when self-isolation became a necessity and not just recommendation, we call ourselves hostages of our own apartments. But even in dark times we should remember all the good and beautiful that is still left in this world. Pour wine and include films that immerse you in another reality.
I recommend you the following:
1. “Aventurier de l’art” is a film that I received as a gift from my French friend. The whole film is drawn like a picture. This film tells us about the development of the Art and literature in the early 20th century. The birth of Fauvism, Cubism, Dadaism, Surrealism… “Aventurier de l’art” is suitable for those who are well versed in the history of art and want to expand their knowledge.
2. “The power of art” by Simon Schama – a series of films about different artists of different centuries. The viewer is immersed in the world of the geniuses of painting, along with them experiencing the path of creative embodiment. This is the only way to imagine, feel and appreciate how the greatest masterpieces of painting on Earth were created. Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Picasso, Van Gogh, Turner, Rothko, David, Bernini… I strongly advise you to watch the series about Rothko and Bernini.
3. “Frida” is suitable not only for the experts, but also for those who enjoy the actor play and the courage (the scandal with producer Harvey Weinstein) of stunning Salma Hayek. Passionately, brightly and lovingly.
4. “Modigliani” – it is difficult to comment on it somehow. You should watch this movie if you are a lover of exaltedly tragic love stories, as well as if you value atmospheric music in films. Despite the fact that the film is not completely true and realistic, I can only say that this is one of the best examples of cinema. Starring Andy Garcia.
5. “Savage” – a description of the life of Gauguin during his move to Haiti. In the role of the artist Vincent Cassel. There is no speaker in the film. Complete meditation.
6. “Sin” is a very strange and very complex film about the artists’s suffering during creating his masterpieces. It’s not a historical film and not a guide to the artist’s work, there is much more difficult meaning and philosophy hidden, than it seems at first glance. Konchalovsky create this film not for everyone.
7. “Best Offer” is a feature film about a collector of works of art. The protagonist – not a famous person, not a politician, not an artist, he is a lonely person who understands how bad it is to be alone. And each of us has a choice - for what or whom life is worth living. Awesome and tragic.
8. “Midnight in Paris” is an adventure of a Parisian who is randomly transferred to the 20th century, where he meets his beloved artists and writers alive. Very funny, you will definitely feel happy after watching!
And what kind of art films do you watch during stayhome time? 🎥
