HSE students' slang is very specific, so it is necessary to be informed of it.

  1. «Blok» - it means that the grade for the exam is blocking and to have a credit for this discipline you must get for exam at least 3,5 or 4 (it depends on discipline prodram).
  2. Formula – it is the formula of your final grade. Each teacher has his own formula with different coefficient for homework, tests and any other forms of knowledge control.
  3. Programma or PUD - the programme of educational discipline. It’s an official document, which you can find at HSE official site, for every discipline at our University. Why do you need it? There you can always find information about the «formula», literature and the quantity of test during the whole course, for example. So, this document is very useful sometimes.
  4. «Nakop» – your accumulated grade except the grade for the exam (Full version: «nakoplennaya»)
  5. 3.49 - pain… To pass the exam you must have not less than 3,5 and in some cases 4
  6. Rounding  from 0,6 - one more pain. Imagine: you have 7,5, mathematical rounding starts from 0,5 and you would have 8, but some teachers start to round from 0,6.
  7. «What’s the weight of nakop?» - the most frequently asked question at HSE. It means which coefficient accumulated mark in the mark formula has.
  8. «Will we have «avtomat»?» - the second frequent question in HSE. It means: «Will we have automatic marks?». You can get automatic marks and do not go to the exam if your teacher has this practice.
  9. RUZ – this is the application for your curriculum. This is the most unpredictable thing in your life, just believe us. Check it twice a day to be informed of all changes you have.
  10. LMS – electronic educational environment. Here are all your grades, rating, disciplines and everything else. Plus, many teachers upload here homework or even some tests. May be one day you will be so lucky to have the final exam in this system. Also you should know one thing: LMS could freeze at the most crucial moment. Because of it we advise you to upload all your projects not at the last moment.
  11. Uchebka – office of the head of studies. This place will be your second home. You need certificate of study, change something in your curriculum – anything, you should go to this office and your problem will be solved.
  12. BZHD – it is the discipline which have each student at HSE at the first year. Do not be afraid of it. Usually this exam is passing at LMS, so it is easy to start your education like an excellent pupil.
  13. SOP- students’ grade of teaching. You are obligated to fill this form every module. Here you can rate the usefulness of the course and other many criteria. Also you can leave comments about the teacher and the course at all.
  14. Zapara – this word you will hear every day during the session week in such ways like «I have a zapara» or «I’m in zapara». It means that you have a lot of deadlines, projects, homework and you do not have free time at all.
  15. Trilist or Trilistnik - one of the dormitories in Odintsovo. Adress:Ulitsa Mayakovskogo, 2, Odintsovo
  16. Porech’e – the biggest party of HSE students with alcohol, beer pong, Twister in underwear and much else. The first party was in 2001. Since that time it has been organized more than 30 times. You can visit it in autumn or in spring or two times.
  17. Myaso – it’s the main building of HSE (Moscow) at the Myasnitskaya street, 20, Luybyanka metro station. Here you could find humanity students.
  18. Kirpich – it’s another building at the Kirpichnaya Street,33, Semyonovskaya Metro station. Here you could find students of Management, Logistics and Business-Informatics.
  19. Pokra – this is love and pain at the same time for all HSE students. It’s a new building at Pokrovskaya Street, which is the best one in HSE. Here you can find great space for coworking, excellent canteen, incredible atrium and new computer classes.
  20. Shabla – building at the Shabolovskaya Street. But it looks like maze, as there are at least 6 buildings at the same place.
  21. Tryohsvyat - the most difficult in pronunciation building at HSE at the Tryohsvyatitel’skiy pereulok Street.
  22. Orda – another building at the Bol’shaya Ordiynka Street.
  23. Hitra – building at the Hitrovskiy Pereulok Street.
  24. Red Button («Krasnaya Knopka») – the service at the official HSE site, where you can write complains, dissatisfaction of the educational process or of the teachers. Positive comments and suggestions are also welcomed.
  25. VBM – vacant budget place for education.
  26. PGAS – it’s heightened governmental scholarship. There are some conditions to get it, which you can find out at the «uchebka»;)
  27. Stipuha- regular scholarship.
  28. Rating – rating of all students at your faculty and year. This rating depends only on educational success (your grades). You could get a discount of educational price if you are in the first 50% of the rating. The higher you are in rating the bigger discount you will have.
  29. Group e-mail – it’s the mail, to which every member of your academic group has access. Usually teachers send here materials for seminars or grades. It is an alternative for LMS, but much more convenient. 
  30. Corporate e-mail – it’s your personal mail at Microsoft 365. DO NOT forget the password of this mail, you will need it!
  31. IUP- individual educational plan. Just imagine: you failed the exam, you failed the retake an you failed the commission (your last(!) opportunity), you suppose that now you are not a student? Of course, no! You may take the «IUP» for this discipline. You will study it once more with students from the previous year, and will try to pass this exam once more. But this option, unfortunately, is not free.
  32. Nezach – if you failed the exam. ( «I’ll have nezach», «I have nezach»)
  33. 23:55 – usually the time of deadline is 23:59, but sometimes 4 minutes earlier. Often these 4 minutes are so necessary.
  34. Deadline – if you don’t know what is it, you are lucky man! It is the time limit when you can upload your project or homework. Usually if you are late, you will get lower mark or even 0.
  35. Curator – This is a student at the 2nd, 3rd or even 4th year, who will be open to help you any time and to adapt to HSE life. Usually each group has 2 or 3 curators. All of them are students. And they are volunteers, so it is their real desire to help newbies. You can ask them to send you some materials for the exams or anything they have since previous years.
  36. Posvyat – initiation you as a student. But usually it’s a party with first-year students of your faculty. It is organized by your curators. You should visit this party to find new friends and acquaints. 
  37. HSE pass photo – one and only thing in HSE, which you will hate. You should be like a queen/king, if you want more or less NORMAL photo at your pass. Lifehack: you always can use a sticking-plaster to hide bad photo. But every security guard at any building at HSE will see it, unfortunately.
  38. Obshyaga –  a short title for dormitory.
  39. DOD – short name of Open Day, when you can come and ask any question about the faculty or about the university at all.
  40. Antiplagiat – may be you know it as an anti-plagiarism. This is the system (in LMS), which check the originality of your paperwork. Usually you must have not more than 20% of borrowing from any sources. If you have more, you will get not more than 0.
  41. HSE Day – the big university festival in Gorky Park every September. Communicate with professors and students ,visit interesting lectures(also, in English), do sports, learn how to dance in different styles, join to other students in master class, find out a lot of information about student HSE organizations, visit fashion show, take part in sporty and intelligent activities and go to concert of popular musicians in Russia. The festival will be a great opportunity not only to take a stroll and have fun, but also to become part of the big HSE family!
  42. Minor – this is an additional education group of courses of one educational program. Minor makes it possible to obtain specific knowledge that is useful for the main educational program (major), or, conversely, expand the educational horizon by becoming acquainted with a fundamentally different discipline. The main thing when choosing a minor is a real interest in the subject. Minor is chosen at the end of the first year, and pass it in the second and third year.
  43. Credit – a credit is a unit that gives weight to the value, level or time requirements of an educational programme. A credit reflects how much time an average student spends on learning the offered material, doing tasks, answering questions, reading additional literature, browsing web resources, etc. Both contact hours spent on class and homework are considered. HSE provides credits to students studying at international universities as part of academic mobility programmes and/or taking part in MOOCs of leading world universities.
  44. Project fair (yarmarka proektov) – a section on the tower website where you can find different projects and apply for them.
  45. VKR – graduation qualification work, or, more simply, a diploma.
  46. Nauchnik (scientific adviser) – your most faithful friend and assistant in writing coursework and  VKR. You need to choose one of the teachers in your department and collaborate with him throughout the writing of the entire work. He or she also evaluates your work.
  47. Vyshka Family – site with a lot of information about HSE student organizations and cool events for everybody from surfing to mafia. Moreover, here you can hand out your vyshkacoin.
  48. Job fair - in LMS there are many different vacancies.  Twice a year, a Job Fair is held in different HSE buildings. There will be representatives of top companies, you can ask all the exciting questions, try yourself in an interview without getting into a ban.
  49. NIS (scientific research seminar) – at these seminars, students discuss the nuances regarding the rules for writing term papers on specific topics selected by students. Students acquire knowledge about organization work on the term paper and the rules of quoting, as well as design.
  50. Project seminar - The main goal of the project seminar is to introduce the theory and practice of creating, implementing and evaluating the results of social projects, as well as creating and implementing their own social projects. At the end of the discipline, the project teams prepare a written report and a presentation on it for the project conference.
  51. NIRS – scientific research competition. HSE student research competition is held annually to popularize research activities in the student community. Winning or prizewinner in NIRS gives points when you go to HSE magistracy. The winners and laureates of the NIRS often publish their works in Russian and foreign scientific publications or participate in international conferences.
  52. Student Council - the Student Council is an elected representative body of student self-government, representing the views and interests of students, coordinating the implementation of educational, scientific and extracurricular student initiatives.
  53. Business Incubator (HSE Inc) is a division of the Higher School of Economics, which helps novice entrepreneurs find contributors, improve the idea of a startup, grow and earn. For students of the tower participation is free. The HSE Business Incubator also oversees the work of two entrepreneurship minors: intracorporate enterprise and startup from scratch.
  54. Vyshkacoin – HSE crowdfunding platform. Owing to it, students can decide for themselves which projects are worthy of financial support. Each student has 1 vyshkacoin in order to support the initiative of the HSE organizations that he liked.
  55. NIR (Research work) – scientific work related to scientific research, research, experiments in order to expand existing and obtain new knowledge, test scientific hypotheses, establish patterns that manifest in nature and in society, scientific generalizations, scientific substantiation of projects.
  56. Voenka (Military department) – military department uniform allows male students not to join the army after HSE. Guys must ride and undergo military training once a week.
  57. Koeff – a coefficient in the evaluation formula. How many percent is the control element (test, homework, project, case, exam, etc.) from the total mark.
  58. Сast-Iron Egg (Chugunka) – student award, which is awarded annually to students for their contribution to the extracurricular life of HSE and the most outstanding events of the year. Concert, bright event and show
  59. “Fly off with a discount” - HSE students may receive a discount on tuition based on the results of exams at admission or by the rating at the end of the course (before re-enrollment), but if they are applied an academic penalty, they will fall in the rating, will receive no interest or more than three grades 4 or 5.
  60. Quota – HSE has the number of positions for student with tuition free education without passing exams for bachelor programs. Students with quota positions are from the CIS countries.
  61. “I am the winner of the olympiad“ - HSE annually enrolls students with tuition free discounts for winners of olympiads.
  62. “Tselevik” (enrolment in HSE with a special purpose)  - admission of applicants whoes tuition is paid by future employers.
  63. Bachelor+ – the opportunity to supplement your resume with additional skills (for extra payment due undergraduate education) such as marketing, finances, foreign languages, soft skills, law and programming.
  64. HSE Night – the night of games, dances, master classes and performances was organized as the “Night of Birth” of the HSE in 2017. It was an anniversary celebration, because HSE was 25 years old.
  65.  “Preza” – you will do it all night before seminar. Often HSE student have to prepare homework for seminars with presentation (MS Power Point).
  66.  “Starosta (headman)” – very responsible person in your group, who communicates with teachers, sends them via e-mail and helps you with some problems.
  67. Center for Support of Student Initiatives (CSSI/CPSI) – HSE helps bring their ideas to life, provide resource support and share experiences. Student organizations and student projects are the “face” of HSE. All this is created by students for students, the university and the city.
  68.  IELTS – not real IELTS. English exam in the format of IELTS. During the 2nd year of their Bachelor’s degree, students of all HSE degree programs (except for ICEF) must take the Independent English Language Test in the period from 10 March to 30 March . Exam consist of Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking
  69. Mobility - students can study by internal mobility: for example, travel from the Moscow campus to St. Petersburg, in Russia - in another university in Russia, international - in another country. Received loans will be credited to the student’s curriculum based on the learning outcomes.
  70. Priyomka (reception campaign) – the most active phase of recruiting students for bachelor and magister programs. It takes place in the summer on June. It consists of communicating with applicants and their parents, setting a passing score, daily viewing the number of original certificates on the program. If the student works in acceptance, they are paid a salary.
  71. Academ (academic leave) – vacation (maximum 12 months) during which the university allows the student to interrupt studies at a university for a good reason. Academ can be taken if you cannot continue studying due to medical conditions,  family or other circumstances.
  72. Botat’ (to swot up) - to study intensively.
  73. OP (Education program) - education is on educational programs. This means that any applicant first chooses an interesting program for himself, then tries to enter it, and then, if he becomes a student, he will study on this program. More than 40 different areas of OP are offered by HSE.
  74. Disciplinarka (chastisement) – disciplinary sanction, one of the main penalties for violation of TAC, three of these lead to expulsion.
  75. How much does it weigh? – how much percent does this work(test, homework, activities during whole seminars, exam and ect.) make up of the final grade.
  76. Are we registrated today? – teacher registers student who attendent the class or student in some cases can register themselves.
  77. Pokaz (Presentment) – «When is pokaz?». Teachers have to demonstrate students' exam works after exam. Every HSE student has the right to see his/her work and ask questions why it was rated this or that way, for example, 8 but not 10.
  78. Online course - HSE students are required to choose one online course per year and take it.
  79. Modul – a part of a school year. The school year is divided into four modules. The module for the student always ends with an exam session. Not every discipline has an exam at the end of the module. There are disciplines that last several modules.
  80. Studak (student ID card) – a Student ID card is an official document certifying that you are an HSE University student. Exchange and visiting students receive their student ID from SIMOStudent International Mobility Office after receiving a notification via email. A student ID allows students to apply for a student social (transport) card which offers a significant discount on public transport in Moscow and a lot of other offers discounted admission into some museums, theatres, cinemas, clubs, cafes and etc.
