Navigating Russia’s Language Labyrinth: A Dilemma of Multilingualism
Just over a year ago, I made a decision that quietly transformed my world by choosing Spanish as my second foreign language. What seemed then like a simple academic choice has since opened the door to an intricate and fascinating maze of languages woven throughout this vibrant city of Moscow as I navigate it in this academic voyage. It has also come to me as a moment of cultural appreciation as understanding other people’s tongues and languages means getting impacted by their culture, directly or indirectly.
This journey is one to constantly look back and count the rewards, and if anyone would have told me it will be better in such a short time, I would have denied it. From tripping over “hola” and “gracias” to discussing everything from travels, professional hopes, movies, and vacations, my progress is a testament to the human capacity for growth and lifelong learning. But this is only a single thread in a much larger and richer fabric.
What truly fuels my motivation is the unique environment I am privileged to be part of. The School of Foreign Languages can best be described as an ecosystem of linguistic passion and excellence. Having to watch and hear colleagues speak many international languages throws a challenge for one to thrive harder. This vibrant environment reflects a broader and deliberate national vision of cultivating experts and global communicators who are ready to navigate the complexities of trade, international relations and diplomacy.
Academic Programs at HSE
Besides, the programs of study themselves are outstanding. HSE, classified and rated among the best in Russia, offers world-class faculty, innovative teaching methods, and a future-oriented curriculum that goes beyond language acquisition. It draws on the constant changing world to stay relevant to the course for current knowledge needs and employable skills relevant to the job market. The School of Foreign Languages in Particular, where I am a master’s student in Foreign languages and Intercultural Communication, turns attention on research, cutting-edge digital courses across nine languages, and emphasis on intercultural communication to prepare students not only to speak the languages but to become true citizens of the world, where every word spoken in a language instantly builds friendship and bridges cultural gaps. This caring yet challenging atmosphere inspires dedication and continuous growth every day.
My goal, however, remains crystal clear that by the end of my final module next March, I would have reached the level of B2 in Spanish, a demanding target requiring great discipline. However, the structured support from the program makes this venture exciting, and the dream closer than it was meant. It is also dutiful to offer encouragement that those who wrestle with verb conjugation and unfamiliar syntax, the struggle is indeed real, but there are few experiences in life as rewarding as speaking another language deeply.
The City Wonders
Outside academics, I face a more chaotic classroom which is the city of Moscow itself. English to which my lectures are anchored on, leaves the room as the city becomes a living dictionary. The resonant sounds of Russian fill the streets, the shopping malls, cafes and city centre. It is a language I am committed to mastering so I can connect with everyday people, the baker, the bus driver, the passer-by. But, while Russian resonates, beneath the city’s surface, Uzbek, Tatar, and other tongues weave together a reminder of this metropolis’s cultural richness, and walking along these spaces with Spanish phrases swimming through my thoughts, my native Tiv language slipping in unexpectedly, a sound and feeling without direct translation, echoing nostalgia for my homeland, I wonder the puzzle called language, that one cannot just break all and speak as many as possible at once.
Keeping many languages in my memory and having to switch intermittently brings some questions of which language truly belongs to me now? Whether it is the one I think in? The one I dream in? Or the one that blaze with longing, flowing through when I call home to speak with family in Nigeria?
Moscow does not have easy answers. It listens patiently and talks back in a cacophony of voices, inviting me to sort out this labyrinth. Maybe that’s the point: not to confound but transform. This labyrinth has transformed into a place of re-creation, teaching that a single key can unlock only one door, and if one is to be a true global citizen, then one should learn how to handle an entire labyrinth, appreciating every whisper, bark, and hum along the way.
My time at the Higher School of Economics, especially the School of Foreign Languages, has been central to this transformation. It does not only prep you for the unknown, but to critically examine yourself with an inner belief to face the opportunities as they come, both now and in the future.
It is in this symphony of tongues and cultures that HSE University provides the instruments, the skilled conductors, and the inspiring stage. A unique privilege it is to learn and grow within such a visionary institution; it is this academic foundation that gives me the confidence and the tools to find my voice in the linguistic maze of Moscow. The city gives itself away as a bustling and beautiful one that everyone would want to explore, and with this, the language becomes an all-important factor. Technology may have played an important role as language apps offer alternatives for translation, but face-to-face communication gives a more genuine connection, with gestures and facial expressions being part of the process.
