Volunteering at HSE
Studying in HSE University, I picture the spirits of creative communication, international lectures, and career-development possibilities in the rooms. What I don’t anticipate at first, however, is that one of the most transformative parts of my journey begins not inside the lecture halls, but in the world of volunteerism.
HSE University is the place of both academic excellence; it is also dynamic space which cultivates initiates, responsibility and leadership. By the virtue of its vast volunteering programs network, students are able to give back to the community of the university, participate in important causes and develop as persons. From volunteering to help run international events to assisting freshers through orientation weeks, volunteering at HSE is not a pastime, it’s a living.
Expectations of initiative and support
Volunteering ecosystem of HSE resides at the core of a belief that students are not passive beneficiaries of education, but rather the creators of their surroundings. The university supports the students’ initiative, presentation of their ideas, and leadership in organization of cultural, academic, and sociability events.
There are official volunteering services at HSE that assist students in finding the opportunities that correspond to what they can do and what they are enthusiastic about. If you are a people person or a behind the scenes organizer, there is a role for you to make your contribution. More importantly, there is room for growth.
Volunteering isn’t just about getting hours for a portfolio; it is about creating community, learning by doing, and forging friendships that go beyond campus walls.
Orientation Guides: The first friends in a new world
One of the first volunteering programs that I myself participated was that of the Orientation Guide Program. Upon arrival to Moscow as a foreign student for the first time, the city appeared to be massive, the language – intimidating, and the university procedures – rather complicated. Then there was my Orientation Guide – a student from the HSE willing to help newcomers to settle in Russia.
From airport transfer post to dormitory entry, from city touring to instructing on how to use metro card or SIM card- such volunteers are very key for international students to feel at home. But they are not just guides, they become friends, cultural translators, sometimes even unwitting therapists at homesick nights.
Not only is it helpful to help somebody to settle into a new country; it is also very satisfying. One of the most rewarding experiences is watching how a confused student becomes a confident participant of the university life.
HSE Olympiad: Academic Excellence Meets Student Leadership
Every year, the HSE International Olympiad – a major academic competition for talented school students of Russia and beyond – is held by the HSE University. The organization of such a complicated event entails the help and collaboration of an army of volunteers.
As a volunteer, you may assist in the preparation of material, attend to the registrations, assist the organizing committee or even work with the participants directly. As I volunteered for the Olympiad, I was part of a logistics team. It was a rescue-mission training program in project management, event organization, and crisis management. But other than that, it offered me an opportunity to work with people from various other faculties and backgrounds.
One of the most astounding moments in the Olympiad is when younger students, sometimes only 15 or 16, look at the task with ambition and brilliance. Volunteering at this place is not just about helping an event, it is about being a hand in shaping the future of HSE itself.
Moscow Marathon: Running for a Cause
In the autumn, thousands of runners run in the streets of Moscow for the Moscow marathon, and HSE students are there as well – not only as participants, but as volunteers. The university has a traditional aspect with which it engages the students in the process of the event as part of its broader relation with the Moscow city community.
Volunteers do everything from registration booths and water stations to escorting runners throughout the course and cheering them along the way. Participation in such a huge event is thrilling. Sparks are in the air – fuelled by athletic resolve, spirit of community and just plain human interaction.
I learnt about the forces of collective actions during volunteering at the Moscow Marathon. It also informed me about the level of integration of HSE into the city and its initiatives. You are not just a student of a university – you are a citizen of Moscow and your contribution is important.
Event Management: Conferences, Festivals, and Beyond
HSE is a center of conferences, academic symposiums, guest lectures, and international forums. All these events can be possible due to a well-trained group of student volunteers who handle logistics, hospitality, translation and technical support.
I recall volunteering in the HSE International Student Conference and being a contact person to a professor from Germany. It was an intense, but rewarding experience – translating, organizing transport, sorting schedules. It was also an opportunity to network with scholars from all over.
On the same note, HSE Day and Golden HSE Awards are prestigious events where students volunteer a lot. From the rehearsals to the management of the crowd, the behind the scenes work gives you a hands-on education that is not taught in books. These experiences are most often used as stepping stones for careers as public relations, event planners, and communications.
Social Impact and Outreach
Volunteering for HSE isn’t all about the university events; it’s about community work. Different student organizations help underprivileged people, organize environment clean-up drives or carry out campaigns for social issues such as mental issues and equality.
For example, Dobroshkola (Доброшкола) is one of the HSE initiatives that encourages volunteerism in social good projects. The students tour around orphanages, help in animal shelters and help the old. Some organize donation drives, literacy programs, or workshops in concurrence with NGOs. During one of my winters, I have volunteered at a coat collection drive for homeless populace of Moscow. It was extremely cold outside and we were standing at the metro stations gathering warm clothes from the passersby. At the beginning, people walked by without even noticing me, but then the woman took a full bag of coats and said, “Thank you for remembering those who are forgotten”.
That moment stays with me.
Building Leadership and Career Skills
And, volunteering develops needed skills that employers seek – ones that can be listed on a resume. leadership, teamwork, time management, communications, and adaptability. It presents the industry-relevant challenges and necessitates the addressal of them in a time-relevant manner. You learn how to cope with stress, cooperation with people of different cultures, and how to think fast.
In fact, many of the students become heads of volunteer groups, allocate budgets or even form student organizations. In HSE, if you have an idea, there is always a way to make it become a reality and, more often than not, volunteering is where it all begins.
Besides, volunteers at HSE frequently get official awards such as certificates, recommendations, or even credits in some of the academic programs. It’s not just passion—it’s professionalism.
An Inclusive Space for All
A certain thing that is beautiful about volunteering at HSE is that this is inclusive. It does not matter if you’re a Russian student or an international one, a freshman or a senior, an introvert or an extrovert – there is a place for everyone. You do not have to be fluent in Russian nor must have an experience. There is only need to be willing and have a heart to serve.
A lot of international students, including me, discovered their most intimate friends and the strongest feeling of belonging in these voluntary activities. It thawed our relationship with locals, let us know various student communities and helped us to practice Russian in the most natural way ever possible.
I did not simply show them the city, my friend from Italy explained after leading an orientation group, - I re-discovered it for myself.
Why You Should Get Involved
If you are a student of HSE or planning to be – they have to learn more about the volunteering opportunities HSE offers. It will add something to your university life which a classroom experience alone could not provide.
You’ll learn more about people. About Moscow. About yourself.
You will learn talents you never knew you had, make memories that you will cherish for the rest of your lives and become a part of a culture that appreciates giving and empathy and working together.
At HSE, volunteering doesn’t become an activity but something that you become a part of a legacy.
Since at HSE, we don’t just learn, but we lead, we serve and we connect.
