A Taste of the Russian Cuisine
The university seeks to immerse foreign students in the taste of the Russian cuisine, and one of such examples is the HSE meal café.
As an international student at HSE, my first visit to the HSE Meal Cafe was a memorable introduction to Russian culture. Walking into the cozy cafe, I was greeted by the warm aroma of traditional Russian dishes, which immediately piqued my curiosity. I decided to try a classic two-course lunch that included borscht, a vibrant beet soup, and blini topped with sour cream. The meal was not only delicious but also very affordable, which was a relief for me as a student on a budget.
Sitting there, I noticed other students from various countries enjoying these meals, which made me feel part of a diverse community. The cafe’s atmosphere was friendly and welcoming, with courteous staff who patiently explained the dishes and even recommended some desserts to try later. This experience was more than just about food; it was a cultural immersion. Tasting authentic Russian cuisine helped me understand the local traditions and gave me a glimpse into everyday Russian meals.
Visiting the HSE Meal Cafe is important for international students because it allows them to explore the rich culinary heritage of Russia firsthand. Russian cuisine is known for its hearty and diverse dishes such as pelmeni (dumplings), borscht (beet soup), blini (pancakes), and shashlik (grilled meat skewers), which reflect the country's geographic diversity, history, and cultural traditions. Experiencing these meals helps students gain a deeper understanding of Russian lifestyle and hospitality, which are closely tied to food and culture.
Visiting the HSE Meal Café for me, as an international student became a small but significant step in my journey of adapting to life in Moscow. It encouraged me to explore more Russian dishes and appreciate the unique flavours of drinks like kvas and kefir. For international students, in Moscow, the cafe is an ideal place to start discovering Russia’s rich culinary heritage while meeting new friends and feeling at home in a new country.
Truly, HSE Meal Cafe is not just a place to eat but a vital cultural experience for international students, offering them a taste of Russia’s culinary traditions and an opportunity to connect with the local culture in an affordable and welcoming environment. This enhances their overall educational and cultural experience.
