As a second-year master’s student at the Higher School of Economics (HSE) Moscow, I have had the privilege of immersing myself in a vibrant academic environment that values cultural diversity. One of the HSE Cultural Festival is an event that not only celebrates the rich tapestry of global cultures but also fosters a sense of unity, identity and mutual respect among students from diverse backgrounds. This festival has profoundly affected my personal and academic journey, broadened my sense of cultural awareness, and understanding our individual core values, showcased by unity in diversity. In addition, I believe it is a cornerstone of cultural preservation in Russian society.
Appreciating unity in diversity Through Cultural Exchange
Participating in the festival has been a transformative experience for me, and it has allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and engage with cultures vastly different from my own, as I am from West Africa. I have learned about the customs, languages, and histories of various countries; For example, I was fascinated by the intricate art of making traditional Indian rangoli, the Holli festival, savouring the taste of delicious Pakistani cuisines, dancing to the rhythmic beats of African drumming, etc. These experiences have not only enriched my knowledge but also enhanced my ability to communicate and collaborate with people from different cultural backgrounds.
For international students like me, the festival has been a lifeline, helping us adapt to our new environment and feel at home in Moscow. This is because the warmth and hospitality extended by the Russian students have made the transition smoother and more enjoyable. Interestingly, The HSE Cultural Festival goes beyond cultural exchange; it fosters a sense of belonging and community among students, by bringing together students, faculties, and even departments. This creates a shared experience that strengthens the bonds within the university.
