What began as a simple language exchange initiative became a journey of connection, empathy, and skill-building. Through organizing cultural events, teaching English to children, and engaging in internships, I discovered hidden talents, built meaningful relationships, and gained invaluable professional experience. Volunteering isn’t just about giving back - it’s a powerful path to self-discovery, cultural understanding, and unexpected opportunities. For anyone at HSE, embracing these experiences can lead to profound personal and professional growth.

When I first arrived at HSE Russia, volunteering was the last thing on my mind. Between juggling classes, assignments, and adjusting to a new culture, I barely had time to breathe. But one day, on a whim, I decided to join a local initiative that organized language exchange sessions for international students and Russian locals. Little did I know that decision would change my perspective in ways I never expected.

At first, I thought I was just helping others by sharing my knowledge of English. But as I got more involved, I realized I was gaining so much more than I was giving. Volunteering became a window into the power of human connection. I met people from all walks of life - students, professionals, retirees - each with their own stories and perspectives. One of the most unforgettable moments was organizing a cultural night where we shared traditional dishes and personal stories. It was in those moments, laughing over plates of food and swapping tales, that I truly understood the value of empathy. It’s a skill that doesn’t just cross borders—it builds bridges.

But volunteering didn’t just teach me about empathy; it also pushed me to grow in ways I hadn’t anticipated. Planning events, managing time, and communicating effectively in a multicultural environment became second nature. These skills didn’t just stay in the volunteer space—they spilled over into my academic and professional life, proving invaluable time and time again. And then there were the connections. Through volunteering, I had the chance to meet industry leaders and build a network that not only inspired me but also provided mentorship and guidance as I navigated my own path.

One of the most transformative experiences came when I got involved in a teaching project. I started out simply assisting with English classes for kids on a weekend speaking club. But as time went on, I found myself taking on more responsibilities - designing lesson plans, leading sessions, and even troubleshooting the occasional classroom chaos. What began as a way to give back turned into a passion for teaching. It also gave me a deeper appreciation for Russian culture and the educational system. Plus, it taught me how to think on my feet and adapt to new challenges - skills that are essential in any cross-cultural setting.

Another thing I observed at HSE is the importance of taking internships seriously. I know a lot of students see them as just another box to check, but they’re so much more than that. Internships can be a gateway to incredible opportunities. I’ve seen peers land their dream jobs right after graduation, all because of the connections and hands-on experience they gained through internships. It reinforced the idea that these opportunities aren’t just about fulfilling requirements - they’re about showing what you’re capable of and making an impact.

Looking back, volunteering at HSE wasn’t just about giving back to the community. It was a journey of self-discovery. It helped me uncover hidden talents, make meaningful connections, and even explore career paths I hadn’t considered before. So, if you’re at HSE and thinking about volunteering, my advice is simple: dive in. Take it seriously. You never know where it might lead.
