The Department of Finance was created on the basis of the Department of Financial Markets which was founded in 1998 and is the oldest in the campus. The staff have a broad spectrum of research interests including problems of corporate finance, financial markets and institutions, risk, corporate tax planning, accounting and audits and innovation.

On March 17, 2025, HSE University – St. Petersburg hosted the international workshop "AI in Finance", organized by Boris Lodiagin and Olga Alekseeva, faculty members of the Finance Department, with the support of Dr. Varvara V. Nazarova, Head of the Department of Finance and by prof. Deepa Gupta from SSE side. The event was made possible through collaboration with Symbiosis School of Economics (SSE), India, and the invaluable support of Dr. Sharma Manoj, Vice President of HSE – St. Petersburg, and Tatiana A. Lezina, Dean of the St. Petersburg School of Economics and Management.
The workshop brought together researchers and students from Russia and India, fostering discussions on AI’s impact on finance and financial markets. Kasiet Kambaralieva, lecturer at the HSE Department of Finance, and Professor Krishnakanta Roy from SSE guided the discussions, ensuring an engaging and insightful dialogue.
The event opened with welcoming remarks by Dr. Jyoti Chandiramani (Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, SIU) and Dr. Varvara Vadimovna Nazarova (Head, Finance Department, HSE – St. Petersburg), highlighting the significance of AI integration into financial analytics and investment strategies.
The program featured:
🔹 AI and Machine Learning in Investing – Boris Lodiagin and Olga Alekseeva explored the application of AI and ML in price forecasting, sentiment analysis, and portfolio optimization.
🔹 AI-Based Interoperable DeFi Payment Network for India’s Forex and Bond Markets – Olipriya Chakraborty and Divyansh Thakur (SSE) introduced a decentralized financial settlement system for India’s forex and bond markets.
🔹 AI Technologies in Sentimental Market Analysis – Iya Churakova (HSE) presented research on improving stock market predictions with AI.
We extend our gratitude to all participants and partners for their contributions to making this workshop a success. "AI in Finance" proved to be a key event in advancing international collaboration and academic dialogue in financial technology research.
