The Autumn School "Change in an Interdisciplinary Perspective" was started in September 20

On September, 20 the Higher School of Economics welcomed with open arms Masters and PhD students from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and University of Regensburg for a joint programme looking at Change in an Interdisciplinary Perspective.

Participants will spend the next week with the Higher School of Economic's cohort of Masters students from the Applied and Interdisciplinary History programme, for a week of interesting lectures and discussions about how academics from different disciplines can work together to understand change in various contexts.

The first day of the Autumn School began with a lecture from HSE's Nikolai Ssorin-Chaikov, in which he discussed the concept of multiple temporalities with reference to the American businessman Armand Hammer, and in doing so gave the perfect introduction into how a cross disciplinary approach can be used to look at the concept of 'change'.

The students then split into their chosen study groups, which are focusing on the following research topics: Historical Change in Empires, Changes in Social Practices and Institutions, Concepts of Change in 20th Century Literature and the Arts, and Environmental Change. In these groups the Ludwig-Maximilians and Higher School of Economics students, with academic staff from both universities, will work together throughout the week discussing important issues and readings through a cross-discinplinary lens. Each group will present their findings to the rest of the participants on the final day of the summer school on Sunday.

After a stimulating morning of academic discussion and debate, the students had the chance to relax and get to know each other on a boat trip, which introduced the beautiful city of Saint Petersburg to our visitors as they sailed along twisting canals of the Neva. Throughout the next week the students will enjoy a number of excursions together, including a trip to Staraya Ladoga together on Monday.

It is always a pleasure to work with people from around the world with similar research interests, and therefore we hope that this week will be a success and that we can build a long-term partnership between both universities.
