Course Syllabus

Abstract

Organization theory and design is a macro examination of organizations because it analyzes the whole organization as a unit. This course focuses on the themes and tendencies that are central in contemporary organization theory. The practical application is based on the main issues of organizational design and aims also at better understanding of how various theoretical perspectives can be used to reflect on actions and processes within real organizations. The course contains the examples and analysis of the key processes of organizational design. This course also emphasizes the applications of organization theory in topics that are essential to organizational success, including strategy implementation, innovation, organizational structure and culture, change management, and power and influence.

    The major academic purpose of the Group Project is to challenge students to apply theories, concepts, models and tools from the classes and from their previous academic background and to learn additionally. The Group Project is a research & business practice project where students act as a consulting team (3-6 persons) to analyze the main business processes, organization structure, assess the current state of the business; and design the new organization. In the process of detailed work during 4 weeks, the team sets the project goals and research areas, develops a strategy to reach the goal, and then implements it to achieve results and to produce sound recommendations. At the end of the course students should submit and present the final group project report. Group reports should be done in the form of consulting reports.
