Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course is aimed at acquirement basic knowledge and competences of modern German language, including phonetics, graphics, normative grammar and vocabulary in the amount provided by the course. The course consists of tutorials (112 hours). Tutorials or practice run provide students with basic knowledge of phonetics, intonation, pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary of modern German and focus on practical activities and exercises as well as project work. The tutorials also involve feedback on students’ written work, aimed at developing basic linguistic knowledge and practical skills of German, presenting the project results and home-reading in the written and oral forms.

  • non-blocking Activity
    The activity consists of Written Assignments (Essay), project work and interim tests. Written Assignments include writing an essay (10-12 sentences, 100-120 words). Project work involves the creation of a presentation - individually. Each presentation should have 3-5 slides with brief information. The student freely talks about the material using his presentation. 5-7 minutes are given for the performance. The presentation is a required part of the course and is done by the student at the end of each unit. The test is carried out at the end of each topic in the syllabus. 1-hour duration. Written test including vocabulary and grammar assignments.
  • non-blocking Exam
    The examination test takes place 5-10 days before the oral part of the exam. The test includes reading, grammar, vocabulary and a written part. The test takes 1.5 hours. Format of the exam: instructor in class, students in class / multiple classrooms and online. Using online platforms (Zoom/ MS Teams/ Skype, etc.) for students who have a reason not to attend the exam in person. The written portion of the exam is conducted on an online platform. You must connect to the exam as per the time and date mentioned in the LMS. In order to participate in the exam, students are obliged to: provide their name at the beginning and end of the test, report to the exam exactly as scheduled. During the exam, students are not allowed to: communicate (in social networks, with people in the classroom), use notes and hints, cheat. During the exam, students are allowed to: use a blank Word sheet to write down a short answer. Short-term disruption of communication during the exam is considered a communication disruption of up to 10 minutes. A prolonged disruption of communication during the exam is considered a disruption of 10 minutes or more. The final test consists of 45 tasks and includes lexical and grammatical tasks, listening and writing tasks. The total number of points is summarised into a score on a 10-point scale. The scores are rounded arithmetically. The duration of the test is 120 minutes. The oral part of the exam is on tickets (a survey on the course materials). On the oral part of the exam, the student pulls out a ticket in which two questions are given. 5-7 minutes are given for preparation. The teacher has the right to ask additional questions. Exam format: teacher in class, students in class / multiple classrooms and online. With the use of online platforms (Zoom/ MS Teams / Skype etc.) for students who have grounds for not being on the exam in person. The student's computer must meet the requirements: the presence of a working camera and microphone, support for online platform. To participate in the exam, the student is obliged: to put his photo on the avatar, to appear for the exam according to the exact schedule, and when you answer, turn on the camera and microphone. During the exam, students are forbidden to: communicate (on social networks, with people in the room), use notes and tips, write them off. During the exam, students are allowed to: use a blank Word sheet to record a short answer. A short-term communication failure during the exam is considered a communication failure of less than a minute. A long-term communication disruption during an exam is a violation of a minute or more. In case of a long-term communication disruption, the student cannot continue to participate in the exam. The retake procedure involves the use of complicated tasks.
