Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course is designed to support students in successfully writing and defending their term papers, which serve as a preparatory step toward writing the Bachelor’s thesis. It is closely aligned with the official Guidelines for Preparing the Term Paper, systematically guiding learners through the development of every required section and ensuring that each component is developed in full compliance with the established standards. The course covers six core topics: research fundamentals and key components; research motivation and literature review; qualitative and quantitative research design; data collection and analysis; reporting and communicating research findings; and research ethics. These areas collectively reflect the key phases of the academic research process. As a result, students will develop the academic competencies necessary not only to complete their term papers successfully but also to write and publish scholarly papers in the future.
Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives

  • to understand and adhere to benchmark standards of academic research
  • to understand the importance of theoretical foundation of their research
  • to apply the principles of an effective literature review
  • to make informed decisions on the research design of their academic papers
  • to recognize the importance of a research framework
  • to address data collection and sampling issues as well as bias and validity issues
  • to understand widely used research methods and data analysis techniques
  • to understand the main principles of research ethics and the consequences of research misconduct
Expected Learning Outcomes

Expected Learning Outcomes

  • Evaluate the readiness of a term paper for potential publication
  • Select an appropriate target journal by analyzing its scope, audience, and aims
  • Know the main components of an academic research paper
  • Outline the key stages in developing a term paper, from topic selection to final submission
  • Understand key concepts related to academic research
  • Organize the articles in the form of a specially tailored literature review table paying attention to the level of maturity of a research field and article types
  • Be familiar with the Guidelines for preparing the term paper
  • Define the purpose and functions of a literature review in academic research
  • Identify the difference between descriptive summaries and critical synthesis in reviewing literature
  • Use academic databases, digital libraries, and search engines effectively to find relevant literature
  • Apply search strategies (e.g., keywords, Boolean operators, citation chaining) to refine and broaden searches
  • Assess the credibility of sources using journal rankings
  • Apply proper academic conventions for in-text citations according to the required style (e.g., APA, Harvard).
  • Compile a consistent and accurate reference list for a term paper
  • Explain different types of research logic (inductive, deductive)
  • Distinguish between theory-driven and data-driven approaches
  • Apply appropriate research logic when formulating and justifying a study
  • Identify underlying assumptions that guide research design
  • Understand the main components of research motivation and their functions in the Term paper text
  • Articulate the academic and practical motivations behind conducting research
  • Justify the significance of a chosen research topic
  • Define what constitutes a researchable problem in management and social sciences
  • Formulate a clear and focused research problem statement
  • Demonstrate how the research problem emerges from a gap in existing knowledge
  • Explain the role of context in shaping research outcomes and interpretation
  • Formulate clear, precise, and researchable questions aligned with the study’s objectives
  • Recognize the academic, professional, and personal benefits of publishing during undergraduate studies
  • Present research findings clearly, logically, and in accordance with academic standard
  • Distinguish between reporting results and interpreting results
  • Integrate findings with existing literature to highlight contributions and address the research question
  • Highlight the theoretical and practical contributions of the research
  • Provide recommendations for practice and suggestions for future research
  • Define the concept of a research strategy and explain its role in academic inquiry
  • Distinguish between research strategy and research methods
  • Justify the selection of an appropriate research strategy for a given research problem
  • Describe the main types of quantitative and qualitative research strategies
  • Match research questions with suitable strategies
  • Identify commonly used data collection methods
  • Apply appropriate analysis techniques for qualitative and quantitative data
  • Define theoretical framewor and understand its purposes in the research
  • Identify relevant theoretical frameworks that inform a research study
  • Define the concept of theory–methodology fit in academic research
  • Define the concept of a research hypothesis and its role in empirical studies
  • Formulate clear, testable, and theoretically grounded hypotheses
  • Assess the relationship between hypotheses, research questions, and empirical testing
