Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course provides undergraduate students with instruments to analyse international trade phenomena. It acquaints students with major findings of international trade theory development that have business applications. We discuss the role of market structure in processing international economic shocks and trade policy instruments affecting the economy. Students will be acquainted with some data sources on international trade, tariffs and quotas.

  • Describe particular international markets and determine features of the market structures, market size, major exporters and importers, trade barriers, that arise in the trade (transportation costs, tariffs, quotas, regulation), demand and supply shocks.
  • Provide qualitative analysis of consequences of particular demand and supply shocks (including trade policy changes) on prices, trade and domestic firms, income distribution.
  • Present and discuss their findings both orally and in written form.

  • Able to apply demand and supply analysis to international trade problems, in particular at the firm level.
  • Able to compile and use international trade data from databases such as COMTRADE and FAOStat and use them for market analysis.
  • Able to apply the adapted Krugman-Melitz framework to analysis of international trade problems, in particular at the firm level.
  • Able to critically analyse business analytics and economic news.
  • Able to present and discuss analytical papers/essays.
