About the Department

The Department of Middle Eastern and African Studies is interdisciplinary and specialises in studying several regions of the Afro-Asian world. The department brings together experts who conduct research on the history, social, political, and cultural development of major countries in Western, Eastern, Central, and Southern Africa, as well as Israel, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, the 22 Arab states of the Maghreb and the Middle East, and the countries of Central Asia. The main goal of the department is to train highly qualified specialists in Asian studies, both for academic and practical fields. The department staff conducts lectures and seminars on language disciplines, history and source studies, politics and international relations, geography and social anthropology, religious studies, philosophy, ethnopsychology, literature, linguistics, culture, and art of the regions under study. A key focus of the department is the development of African studies and the formation of new interdisciplinary and interregional research directions, serving as a foundation for productive cooperation between young specialists, students, and postgraduates.

From November 9th to 12th, the Institute of Asian and African Studies, HSE University – St Petersburg hosted the third International Scientific Conference "Army, Elites and Society in the Middle East and North Africa", organized with the support of the Al-Khalil bin Ahmed Al-Farahidi Center for Arabic Studies and Humanities, University of Nizwa (Sultanate of Oman). The conference brought together researchers from Russia, Oman, Belarus, Turkmenistan, the USA and other countries.

The International Partners Week 2025 became one of the most important international events of the year for the Institute for Asian and African Studies at HSE University-St Petersburg. After five days of the forum, experts in Asian and African studies from HSE University-St Petersburg held negotiations with representatives of 18 global universities from Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America, signed important agreements and shaped the directions for international cooperation in the future. Milana Iliushina, Head of the Department of Middle Eastern and African Studies, visited the Sultanate of Oman as part of an official delegation from HSE University. The colleagues negotiated with Rahma bint Ibrahim Al Mahrouki, Minister of Education of Oman, on key areas of cooperation. They also met with the management of Nizwa University and Sultan Qaboos University in Muscat.

The II All-Russian Scientific Conference of Young Middle Eastern Researchers “Army and Military Traditions in the Middle East” ended at the Institute of Asian and African Studies of the HSE University. The project has been realised for two years already in cooperation with the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Irina Shishova, a 5th year student, won the prize in the section of Arabic Business Writing at the International Competition of Professionally Oriented Translation. Congratulations! The Arabic language programme at the Department of Middle Eastern and African Studies for undergraduate students includes a number of specialized courses aimed at developing practical translation skills in various spheres - from classical poetry to media communication, commercial documents and business correspondence.
