This year, 39 talented young researchers participated in the conference. The conference was held at two locations at once - at the Institute of Asian and African Studies and at the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences. At the beginning of each day, invited experts, researchers from St. Petersburg and Moscow gave lectures to the participants and guests of the conference.
One of the highlights of the public cultural and educational programme of the conference was a master class given by Anastasia Ivanova, tutor of the Department of Middle Eastern and African Studies.
The participants of the master class learnt the secrets of the impressive achievements of Arab warriors, looked at sabres and daggers of the late Middle Ages. Afterward, those interested had the opportunity to try real exercises that Mamluk warriors practiced daily, using a training saber under the guidance of Anastasia Ivanova.
