In the new academic year, classes at all four HSE campuses will start at the same time. This will allow students from university campuses to take up to a quarter of the subjects together. Anna Korovko, Senior Director for Full Degree Programmes, spoke about how the views of HSE students were taken into account when drawing up the new schedule.

When compiling the new streamlined schedule, we studied the opinions of faculty and students. Two options were offered to determine preferences. A common characteristic for both options was time compatibility, taking into account the time difference with the Perm campus and the tradition of our two branches to have classes start at around 8 am.

About 20% of students and more than 30% of teachers took part in the survey. While none of the options received an overwhelming majority, the teachers favoured one of the schemes a bit more than the other, so it was eventually approved.

In Moscow and St. Petersburg, classes will now begin at 9:30 and the number of classes will be reduced to seven. In Nizhny Novgorod, the first class will start at 8 am, and in Perm at 8:10. Breaks between classes will vary in duration from 10 to 30 minutes.

The Student Council has repeatedly campaigned for longer breaks between classes to allow more time to go to the cafeteria. Moreover, with the new schedule, instructors will have additional time to set up equipment they need for classes, which is definitely relevant for the new intercampus courses.
