Course Syllabus

Abstract

The defense of the thesis concept is the presentation of a research project completed by a student. The Project Proposal is an abstract for future research, written in English. The project indicates the structure and problems of the research, formulates the author's main research assumptions, methodological basis and author's hypotheses and conclusions. The Project Proposal is submitted for evaluation by the student posting the Project in the HSE LMS system on time.
Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives

  • In case of successful presentation of the project, the student will acquire knowledge of: - professional vocabulary necessary for writing a research paper in English, - special terms and stable combinations characteristic of academic speech in English. In case of successful presentation of the project, the student will be able to: - logically build the text (put forward a thesis, give arguments and draw conclusions), - demonstrate the coherence of the text both at the lexical and syntactic levels, - compile bibliographic lists. If the project is successfully presented, the student will have the following skills: - writing academic texts in English; - reading English‑language scientific texts on professional topics; - searching for the necessary information in scientific texts in English.

  • The student is able to formulate the relevance of the research and indicate what results are expected to be obtained.
  • The student uses a rich lexical and grammatical framework for the research project, adhering to spelling and punctuation rules. The terms are used correctly.

  • The student is able to structure the work in accordance with the requirements.

    The final grade for the Project must be assigned no later than the date established by the order of the academic supervisor of the relevant educational program of the Faculty of Law at the Higher School of Economics – St. Petersburg. A student who has included the “Academic Writing in English” course in their individual study plan and received a positive final grade for the course before the deadline for submitting the Project Proposal has the right not to post the Project in the LMS system. In this case, the positive grade for the “Academic Writing in English” course is recalculated as the grade for the Project.
