Despite the current COVID restrictions, which resulted in numerous challenges while organizing the ‘СaseChampionship’, the event ended up an overall success and was viewed as ‘fruitful’. At the end of the Championship’s debate session, conducted in a blended (partly online – partly offline) format, the teams were interviewed and asked about their opinion of the event. Below are their comments.
Question 1: “What stage of the Championship did you find the most interesting?”
As expected, opinions were different even within the groups. One team stressed that the research stage gave them a change to learn information that could be of great use in their “professional future”. Another team found feedback from others and their own reflection to be the most significant. One team found the debates to be the most engaging, while others enjoyed researching and creating the presentation. The debate session was, in fact, mentioned in the comments by three of the teams, as an opportunity “to better understand the case and its essence” and “to scrutinize the rivals’ points of view” as well as a challenge for “decision-making”. Eventually, the Championship left the students with “the feeling of achievement”.
Question 2: “In your opinion, what was the most difficult when working on the case?”
As expected by the organizers, the time constraint put significant pressure on the participants. Two of the teams mentioned that they had an issue with time management when it came to completion of the project. While, on the one hand, time pressure was an extra difficulty that the contestants were not happy to face, it was in fact a useful experience for those first-year students who had not possessed strong time management skills before the event. Besides the time constraint, another difficulty mentioned “was finding relevant data that help to support arguments”. But again, a comment like this in fact indicates that the event was a solid learning experience for the participants.
Question 3: “Did you gain new knowledge and skills while solving the case? If so, which ones?”
In addition to the soft skills that were mentioned in question 2, many respondents mentioned gaining “knowledge in the field of strategic marketing”. As one of the teams put it, “It was useful to find out what methods companies rely on when analyzing how to differentiate product lines in certain countries/regions. From a consumer’s point of view, it was also interesting to notice how cultural norms of ours affect marketing campaigns.” Another team reported that they “gained understanding of what case championships are. This experience was also a great practice in teamwork.”
Question 4: “Did your team manage to establish synergy between the members?”
Even though in general the replies to this question were “positive”, there was still a significant range in respondents’ opinions. To some, the Championship contributed to establishing an understanding of how to manage yourself effectively. Others, in turn, saw an opportunity to broaden their horizons, as they viewed the project as a polygon to test how members’ skills synergized.
Question 5: “Was the blended format of the Championship convenient? Did you face any difficulties/challenges?”
Although some teams considered the blended format as a challenge, in the end, the format did not impact the participants negatively.
Question 6: “Would you take part in the next Championship?”
“This experience is truly valuable”… “The debates are reassuring”…The replies frequently mentioned gaining valuable knowledge and experience and unforgettable emotions. And the participants were thankful to the organizers. Despite challenges in setting it up, the Championship was truly a success.
