About the Institute

The Institute of Asian and African Studies was established in 2022 at HSE University-St Petersburg based on the Department of Asian and African Studies, the undergraduate and graduate programmes in the related field, as well as the Centre for Asian and African Studies.

The Institute focuses on the development of professional education along with Asian and African studies as a field of scientific knowledge, aiming to preserve and enhance the achievements of the St Petersburg school of Oriental Studies. The teaching staff of the Institute presently, and rightfully, holds one of the leading positions among educational and scientific schools in Russia.

The Institute includes six departments: the Department of Middle Eastern and African Studies, the Department of Chinese, South and Southeast Asian Studies, the Department of Korean Studies, the Department of Japanese Studies, the Department of International Relations and Political Processes in Asia and Africa, and the Department of Public and Cultural Development in Asia and Africa. Around 100 instructors participate in the educational process, including over 60 candidates and doctors of sciences, as well as more than 10 native speakers of Asian and African languages.

The bachelor’s programme in Asian and African Studies at HSE University-St Petersburg, offered by the Institute, has led the rankings for several years among 22 Russian universities in terms of the quality of state-funded admissions. The programme also consistently ranks in the top three for non-state-funded admissions.

In 2023, the Institute launched a new master's programme of unique educational content, titled ‘Cross-Cultural Studies of Asia and Africa in the Context of International Relations,’ which is expected to become the flagship of Asian and African studies in Russia. This programme introduces a fundamentally new direction for Russian university education by focusing on modern global cultural processes within the context of Russia's foreign policy interests in two crucial geopolitical regions —Asia and Africa.

The educational process is closely integrated with other departments of HSE University-St Petersburg, as well as the School of Asian Studies and the Institute for Oriental and Classical Studies at HSE University in Moscow.
