Course Syllabus

Abstract

This subject is about people in organizations, more specifically how management and leadership approaches and behaviors impact attitudes, conducts, motives, and performance of staff members. The course provides a practical and realistic perspective on several aspects of the work environment to improve team and personal performance and facilitate change initiatives.
Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives

  • Upon the course completion, students are expected to be able to Learn how to detect the main tendencies of the organizational behavior development; Reflect on basics and advanced ways to manage group and team behavior; Learn how to allocate effectively team roles and responsibilities; Study elements of corporate anthropology and culture management, Identify practices of effective decision-making, conflict, and communication, both interpersonal and across the organization; Explain approaches to leading and motivating individuals and teams; Define organizational culture and discuss managerial tools for its development and maintenance; Create a work environment that motivates and engages employees to work productively; Analyze communication processes in the organization and suggest strategies for their improvement.

  • Explain the importance of interpersonal skills in the workplace. Learn the definition of organizational behavior. Explain the challenges and opportunities for managers in using OB concepts.
  • Define three components of attitudes. Explain how behavior always follows from attitudes. Learn what causes job satisfaction. Define the sources of emotions and moods. Provide a definition of personality. Discuss what factors determine personality and how the concepts of core self-evaluation, self-monitoring, and proactive personality help us to understand personality.
  • Learn the three key elements of motivation. Discuss the similarities and differences between motivation theories. Explain how the job characteristics model motivates individuals. Learn different ways of motivating in organizations.
  • Learn the key definitions of Group Behavior. Discuss what the strengths and weaknesses of group (versus individual) decision making. Learn the difference between a group and a team. Explain when work performed by individuals is preferred over work performed by teams.
  • Define the functions and process of Communication. Discuss the communication differences between communication modes. Define common barriers to effective Communication.
  • Define the three types of conflict and the steps in the conflict process. Learn the five steps in the negotiation process and how individual differences influence negotiations.
  • Learn seven key elements to define an organization’s structure. Describe common organizational structures. Define organizational culture and its common characteristics.
  • Learn a definition of a leader. Discuss the differences between a manager and a leader. Discuss how leaders can have a positive impact on their organizations through building trust and mentoring.

    Unlike the course General Management, which focuses on leadership theories, this course emphasizes the practical and behavioral aspects of leadership in modern organizations.
  • Conflict and Negotiation
  • Organizational Structure and Culture. Organizational Change and Stress Management
    Unlike the course General Management, which examines elements of organizational design and levels of culture (e.g., Schein’s model), this course focuses on the impact of structures and cultures on individual and team behavior.
Assessment Elements

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Lecture Engagement Points (LEPs)
    These are small assignments given each lecture in an electronic format based on the information delivered during the lecture.

    The case, video, and articles would have assigned a week before the seminar where they would be discussed and analyzed.

    The case, video, and articles would have assigned a week before the seminar where they would be discussed and analyzed.
  • non-blocking Learning Journal
    At the end of the course, each student will submit a Learning Journal to reflect what you have learned in classes (e.g., insights into managerial duties and responsibilities, a better understanding of analytics at work, self-insights). A reasonable way is to keep a journal throughout the class to make this task easier. Learning Journals have to be upoaded to the SMART LMS.
