Practice of georeferencing of digital maps

On Thursday, February 5, the third meeting of scientific-research group was held.

At this seminar, the head of the project Ivan Sablin taught the members of the group how to georeference digital maps and import the data to one system from another. Oleg Kudinov and Sergey Mikhailov consulted other members of the group as well. On the example of various historical maps of the Russian Empire, students learnt the ways of stretching maps on the grid and imposing them on contemporary world map. One of the possible programs for georeferencing is Quantum GIS. Students learnt how to impose maps in the geographic information system Google Earth. The skill of georeferencing is required for visualization of different kinds of things, for example: changing borders, population density, etc. While working, members of the group found these systems applicable for their own research. For example some of the students decided to use such systems, apart from work in research group, for their course works.
